MESA - Three people were being held at the Madison Street Jail in Phoenix on suspicion of fraud in connection with an Internet scam, authorities said.
Gilbert police and members of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the U.S. Postal Service executed three search warrants in Phoenix and Mesa on Thursday, said Gilbert police Sgt. Jeff Esslinger.
Esslinger said that police arrested Robert K. Floyd, Tina D. Cabezut and Gregory Kelliher on charges that they defrauded at least 20 people out of more than $40,000.
The investigation began a month ago after Gilbert police received complaints from people who tried to buy guns from an Internet site, Esslinger said.
Authorities contend that the Web site promised guns at deep discounts.
Customers would send money orders, cashier checks and federal firearms' licenses to addresses in Gilbert, Phoenix and Mesa to buy the guns, police said.
Although the customers never received the weapons, the checks and money orders were cashed and the gun licenses used to defraud other customers, police said.
Police did not find any guns during the raids but seized computers and some ammunition, authorities said.
