Rem 870 youth -v- Ithica 37DV

Ok - I was thinkin I should get a good 20ga for my 13year old for birds. One of the local hardware stores has new 870 Youth models for $275.00 and anoth of the shops has a used (very good condition) Ithica model 37DV for $250.00. The Barrel on the Ithica is a 28" and looks really long but it is still a light weight 20ga, but the wood looks really good other than the pressed checkering. The 870 Youth is NEW with a 25" barrel and shorter stock. The wood is standard and it is a flat black finish.
I am leaning towards the Ithica, because I feel he will outgrow the smaller 870, where-as he may keep the Ithica for upland birds later in life.
What do you think?????

go for the 870 and when he gets bigger just put a regular stock on it , I got a 870 wingmaster 20 gauge with 26" rem choke barel for my boy and picked up a youth stock for it at a gun show last winter , now he can shoot it for several years and when he needs to we will just put the other stock back on , if you live in where it gets cold having that short stock is nice when you have heavy camo on. try get the price down a little on the 870 ,around here they're a little less than that

I have an Ithaca model 37 12 gauge and a Remington 870 wingmaster 20 gauge. I prefer the Ithaca, but both are good guns.

Me being a Remington m,an this is sorta hrd but...I'd go with the Ithaca.I've owne a bunch of 870's and gotten rid of em all.I'd not part with an Ithaca. When it comes to general huntin here in maine I'd grab the mooseburg before the 870[:0].And you won't hafta change stocks later.Get the Ithaca,he'll thank ya for it later...IMO>

The Ithica is a better gun than the 870. Bottom eject also:)

Work the action on both of them and see which one feels like it has gravel in it.

Since bird guns often have barrels even longer than 28", I'd go with the Ithaca too. Once he learns how to lead the bird, he MAY be more accurate with that in a 20 gauge than with a 25" barrel. Good wood, good action, proven in WWII, it's already starting to age well, and it will make a nicer hand-me-down.

I had an Ithaca 37 20 ga. at about that age. Nice shotgun, light weight and very quick on target. Among my young hunting buddies I was usually the first one to get off a shot at a running rabbit and never fired at one I didn't take.

The gun only had one problem. It was one of the hardest recoiling 20 ga. pump shotguns I've fired.

I would buy him a cheap auto like a Winchester or Mossburg so he won't get recoil flinch while hunting. Buy a used one and sell it as soon as he's "full growed" as my grandfather would have said![:D]

Dang you guys - now I guess I gotta buy both - My Wife won't outgrow the 870 but I know my boy will. I think between my Boy and my 18 year old Daughter I should have at least 2[:D][:D]

I broke down[:(] I went down to finally pick up a S&W 469 that came in last week. I called them before I left work and asked if they would take $200.00 for the Ithica - He countered with $225.00. I went home and picked up my boy and headed into town. The featherweight fits him almost like a glove, just about 1/2" long but a good fit. So, I took it also and a box of clays and a clay thrower on sale and some shells and a holster for the Smith.........God it never ends[:D][:D]
