So here's the deal - My Sister-in-law is a travel agent. She has been working with a group of about 100 firemen from Portland, Or. for a trip to Ground Zero. They originaly booked the trip for the big memorial that never happened (police and firemen clash), and then they all had to cancel. Now they are all going during St. Paddy's Day. There is a funeral scheduled for one of the hero's (body finally found). She is having a problem with the Downtown NY Hyatt hotel. She has booked a bunch of rooms already with them and they have the gaul to charge full rate - no discounts. I guess somebody is making a profit on disaster. Somebody find me their web site so we can flood them with nasties........

Blue Tic, re your trip to "ground zero". Be advised that the hotels in NYC are QUICKLY recovering from the 9/11 tragedy, although they will not tell you that. I believe they are still receiving funds that were set up to help businesses that suffered loss at the time.Another fly in the ointment for you, is that the timing of you trip is one of the busiest for the NYC hotels. As I'm sure you are aware the St Paddy's Day parade is held each year at that time and many of the people who march in the parade stay over.If you can work it out, do come to "ground zero" (although it doesn't look anything like it used to now, they have cleaned much of it up). I believe everyone who can come, should. It is a very moving experience!Perhaps if you come to the "dirty side", we can meet for coffee. I am just across the river (in NJ) from the site.-Charlie

What???? A month or so ago a couple plane loads of Oregonians went to NY to spend money. Per say to stimulate and support NY in a time of despair. Contact Vera The mayor. She could * load enough that the NY'ers could hear her from here..

Got back last nite from NYC.Wife wanted to see ground zero, but I warned her of the waits. Was told to be there at least by 8 to get tickets.Booth opens at 11 am.Then wait in line again for your time to view.We got down close to the site and that was good enough for her.Hotels can still be had for cheap.$99 for the Hilton on times square thru Hotwire (travel site). It was great weather and not too many people. If you'd like a link for hotwire,I'll ask the wife.

Well I wish I was going - but alas - I'm not with the group. She is just frustrated, as this is the second time they tried this.
