Pistol for my Wife

I'm looking for recommendations for a pistol for my wife to shoot regularly. I own the following pistols and she has shot all of them:S&W .38 Special - likes it OK, but it is a revolver and she likes autoloadersBrowning Buck Mark - really enjoys shooting it, that is when she can get it away from our daughter.Glock 23 - doesn't like it because it has too much kick. I even tried 155 gr ammo (instead of the normal 180) and it didn't help. She has also shot a Glock 17 and likes it OK but this partiucular one acts up and she doesn't like to shoot it.The next time we go to the range I'm going to let her try a Besa .380 they have in the rental case.I would appreciate recommendations for a small caliber pistol that she may enjoy shooting. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.Take Care,Zack Jones

If she likes the Glock 17 then maybe a Glock 19 would fit the bill. There is the Kahr 9 that is sweet also.

My wife also is an autoloader advocate. She has a Bersa .380, a S&W 5906 9mm, and a Beretta 84F (single stack .380). She can and will shoot up to .44 Mag, but she says the Beretta 84F is her favorite because the single stack is slim and it's smooth to shoot. Acording to her, the .380's are more fun to shoot, but the double stack 5906, full of Hydra-Shocks is her carry weapon.Just passing along her recommendations.

My missus has a Ruger P89, 9mm. It's a great gun, extremely reliable, and relatively inexpensive. Still, her favorite out of guns is my 10/22 rifle. I don't have a 380 for her to compare to, but maybe the 380 is the best choice of the 3.

I have hesitated to recommend a revolver of any size for a woman ever since I had a female friend who had inadequate finger strength to discharge a weapon with a 12-lb double action pull. I'd say go with a .380 or 9mm compact semi-auto with a trigger pull from 5 to 9 lbs. This will include a variety of guns from the Glock 19 and 26 to the Taurus PTs. Although lighter (meaning alloy or polymer) is usually better, it can mean more muzzle flip. Glocks are known for having relatively less muzzle flip due to the position of the slide slightly lower in the hand. If the 9mm is still too much for her, she's probably a .32 to .380 gal. If you go with a double action model, just make sure it's a fairly light double action. That should be easier to find in the smaller calibers.

I meant to add that although .22s are nice shooters, they may not stop the attack for a while, and a lot of damage can be done by a perforated perp. Also, the .22 has been known to bounce off people's skulls more often than you might think. It's a good round, but I wouldn't call it a good defense round. Some people joke that anything small, like a .25 or .22, is "nice to have for protection when you don't have a gun." Deer and people are comparably sized animals. Ask yourself what you need to reliably bring a deer down at close range when you don't have a guaranteed head or boiler room shot. Similar challenge here. I'd be thinking PPK, Sigma, small Glock, small Millennium, etc. The Bersa doesn't sound like a bad idea. Maybe the little extra weight will appeal to her for control.

Mrs. Mudge has a Glock 30 as her carry gun and loves it. She's only 5'2" and 125 but she shoots the heck out of it. Mudge the protected

Thanks, everyone, for all of the feedback. The local range has a variety of pistols (Bersa 380, Ruger 9mm, etc) that I'm going to have my wife try shooting. Hopefully she'll find something she'll want to shoot on a regular basis.Take Care, Zack Jones

ZJ......my soon to be wifey had never eventouched a gun...of any kind till 5 yrs. ago.At the ranch I handed her my MarkII w/bull.After half a dozen shots she was able to putevery shot at 25 yds. into an 8in. circle. With a heavy barrel the MarkII is one (Isaid ONE guys, not the ONLY) of the mostergonomic, balanced small cal. pistols out there..w/Hogue finger groove grips. I thinkalmost anyone could pick up this gun for the first time and shoot unexspectedly well. Sheshoots it exteremly good now. Shoots almostanything I have now...is working on hercourage to touch off a round in my .454.......she wont even think about one of my shotguns w/a 3 or 31/2 shell...or my .300wthby mag.....dont really blame her..at 5'2 and 110 lbs. both rounds would rock her little cute butt pretty well..rock me at6' 180....but I l-i-k-e it..uh-huh...

I just realized the topic did not mention defense, just the joy of shooting. For that, the .22 is king and I would assume the lady's best choice for a pleasant experience. Handgun with a long enough barrel that she feels good about hitting the bullseye.

RugerNut3 - I assume by your name that when you say Mark II you are referring to the Ruger Mark II .22 cal? I've seen those and they are nice.TailGunner1954 - You are right. She has shot a variety, I just don't know that she's found one yet that she would pick as her primary pistol.Offeror - I specifically left out defense from my post because that would not be the primary purpose of the pistol. I have a CCW permit and bring my Glock along when we go out.Ideally she would pick some sort of 9mm so that the pistol could be used for IPSC/USPSA shooting matches. We were discussing this topic today while out walking and I mentioned that Glock makes the compensated line so I'm going to try to locate a compensated 9mm for her to try.Who knows, maybe I'll just keep buying stuff I want and she can have her choice to shoot any of them Take Care,Zack Jones

Zack, in my very limited experience, a 9mm in a firearm which feels "right" will be the best choice. Your idea of taking her to the range to try everything which is available is the way to go. I consider a firearm to be like clothing, one person's ideal is another's rags.

Just a small note from a small person. I'm 5 feet tall and weigh in the 120's. I carry a pre-ban CZ-85. I love the feel of it and it's accuracy is unbeatable.

When It came time for my wife to have her own gun, we went to the Gun Store that has the biggest selection in town. She Chose her gun based on simplicity and the way it felt in her hand and she chose a Sig P-239 but her hands are as large as mine, her butt is smaller than mine however!

I had to mention the kel-tec .32. I bought one and love it. I plan on giving it to the wife when she gets her ccw.

A Sig/sauer 9mm might be good. Its very easy to handle, low recoil. Its powerful enough for self defense.

The Glock 19 would be perfect for her, it seems. "Carry the biggest gun you can conceal, in the largest caliber you can control."
