Cheap but accurate .308?

I'm looking to load up on some case deals of mil-surplus .308, but I've heard some of it is pretty shoddy stuff and starts to tumble after 100 yards, destroying any chance of long range accuracy.I'm new to the .308 arena, so I'd appreciate all the info I can get.Gracias.

Evil, Here it is on choices of surplus. 1. Radway green L2A2 head stamp shoots real clean and more accurate than any us ball i've shot. Draw-back is that cases are berdan primed and not reloadable. 2. Hirtenburger, the real stuff, check to make sure it is not the Argentinian contract crap. the real Hirt is Boxer primed clean and great ammo. Draw-back is that the bullet jackets are steel with a layer of copper on top. There is a lot of people who hate this but almost all US ball, russian or chinese 7.62 all have the same jacketing process. I don't shoot it out of my Target barreled rifles but in the old mausers and mil semi autos It has done no wear to this date. 3. Lastly I've bought some Chilean or Peruvian or Agentinian 308 that comes in these Nato green headstamp boxes, Much cheaper than either of the top, accuracy is 3" at 100 and 5" at 200 out of my target rifle, this is all that nato requires. It is very clean, cheap and cases are good for reloading. Draw-back is they function well in Miliary semiautos but not in remington 742 , seemed hard to extract often bending the rims or not extracting at all.

I have shot Argentine and Malaisian 308 out of an M1A, L1A1, HK-91 clone and Malaisian and Portuguese out of a MG-42 with no problems at all. Friends have shot British 308 out of a HK-91 clone with no problems. I wouldnt be afraid of any surplus ammo in this caliber.

Not 30 minutes ago, UPS delivered a case of Portuguese .308 ball...$129 + shipping from Classic Arms. This ammo seems to be in continuous supply; as I have been getting it for 4-5 years. 20 rounds/box, 10 boxes/battle pack...battle packs are rugged, but soft/flexible rubber-like material with a built-in handle.

Not nearly as cheap, but very accurate is Cavim .308 Put away a case 2 years ago. Battle packs in "ham cans" and as bright as new.

Evil why don't you buy some really good ammo and start the pursuit of superb marksmanship.....Why buy an M1A and treat it like an AK? Oh and just when are you going to get your M1 Garand???? Have been waiting now for a long long time....I think deep down you really think that old M-1 is just your grandpa's obsolete toy!!! Beach

Thanks for all the good replies so far guys. From the post here and another on HCT, it seems that Hirt is the way to go.Beach:Don't worry, I'll pamper her like she ought to be. I'm going to Front Sight in a few months and need to bring 1,000 rounds with me for the event and practice after hours. 1,000 rounds of match is too steep for Evil's pockets. I own a pool/spa store, remember? I don't make a whole lot in the middle of December!Rest assured, in 4 months when the hot weather hits, I'll have a post up about where to find the best bulk buy on match-grade .308!As for the M1, I haven't forgotten my promise! In due time, I'll get one. I'm glad I waited, 'cause Springfield Armory is now making brand spankin' new M1 Garands in both 30.06 and .308 to the original GI specs. None of the "new receiver, old gun" stuff. Brand spankin' new from the ground up. As soon as Guns and Ammo does a spread I'll see what they say.
