Washington Senator Maria Cantwell E-Mails GUNED The Democant's and Liberals just don't get it, but I give Ms. Cantwell credit for replying! November 13, 2001 Mr. Mike Smith PO Box 5665 Vancouver, Washington 98668 Dear Mr. Smith: Thank you for contacting me regarding the need for improved security measures in airports and on air carriers in response to the tragic events on September 11, 2001. I share your concerns, and appreciate the time you have taken to bring your views to my attention. Like all Americans, I was angered and saddened by these attacks but also determined that we do everything possible to ensure the safety of our skies. On October 11, 2001, the Senate passed legislation that I cosponsored, the Aviation Security Act, S. 1447, by a vote of 100-0. This bill will serve to improve airport and air carrier security and prevent attacks in the future by requiring the federal hiring and training of airport security personnel, the strengthening of flight deck doors and locks, and the additional deployment of federal air marshals, adding to the law enforcement presence and capability in the nation's airports. The bill would also create a mandatory training program for flight crews to deal with attempts to commit aircraft piracy, and establish an Aviation Security Coordination Council. The House of Representatives passed a separate version of this bill, H.R. 3150, on November 1, 2001. The House and Senate versions of the legislation are currently being considered by a conference committee of House and Senate members to resolve any differences. I strongly support the provision included in the Senate version, which requires the federal hiring and training of airport security personnel and will continue to push for its inclusion in the final legislation passed by Congress. Aviation security procedures must be improved immediately. I was disappointed that an amendment I cosponsored, the Displaced Workers Assistance Act, was not included in the version of the bill passed by the Senate. This amendment would have provided financial assistance, job training and health care coverage to American workers in the airline and aircraft manufacturing industries who lose their jobs as a result of the September 11th incidents. As you may know, Boeing announced on October 12, 2001 that the company will likely, as a consequence of these events, lay off 14,000 workers by December 12, 2001, and a total of 20,000 to 30,000 commercial aviation workers may lose their jobs by the end of 2002 - many of whom work in Washington state. Although this amendment was narrowly defeated, I will continue to seek assistance for the workers who are the heart of the aviation industry and deserve equal treatment - and that includes Boeing workers. Again, thank you for contacting me. For information on how to volunteer or donate your time, resources, or blood, please view my website at http://cantwell.senate.gov. Sincerely, Maria Cantwell United States Senator http://www.guned.com/pages/cantwell.html
