ITHACA 37- Field Gun vs Deerslayer

Question for anyone familiar with Ithaca guns. What are the differences between the Deerslayers and the field guns. I know the newer deerslayers come with barrels that are fixed to the receivers, and are a bit heavier. What about the Deerslayers that are a bit older, but with serial numbers after 855,000? Are they the same as the field guns, with the only difference being the barrels? Do they accept interchangable barrels?

I have a small collection of the older guns and believe I have ask about every question possible about them. I have been told there is know difference in the deerslayer and the field gun. They do kick a little.

I think on the older models most of the deerslayers are smoothbore slug barrels that do interchange with the other barrels. I'm not sure but the reciever might be drilled and tapped for scope. I bought a DS police special barrel for one of my old 37's that is 19" and is rifled. It shoots real tight at 100 yds. Hope this helps.
