best M1A ammunition, kB's, slam fires

I recently purchased a standard model Springfield M1A. I've researched a lot about the problems of slam-firing with commercial grade ammunition because the primers are too soft, and I'm wondering if the problem is common. I'm starting off with NATO-spec surplus ammunition which has mil-spec primers that don't slam-fire, but I'd like to eventually use some commercial match ammo if I ever shoot in competition; what are some brands of ammo that you have had success with in the M1A?[This message has been edited by imadork (edited 12-07-2001).]

Not much help here, just wanted to say I load all my ammo for my M1A and M1 garand. Even hunting ammo I load with military powder and to same specs for the bullet weight. As far as slam fires, it is probably because of to soft primers.

I've shot PMC, Winchester, and American Eagle with my M1A.Winchester seemed to have deeper divots in the primers than the PMC and American Eagle, though I had no slam fires even with the Winchester. I dug into this on the internet, and came away with the feeling that match grade ammo from any manufacturer often uses more sensitive primers, so I'm either shooting mil surplus or standard grade ammo. The only slam fire I ever experienced was with an M-60 I rented at a full auto range. It was with C&R brand Frangible ammo.A Slam fire is really not a big deal if it's just one or two shots beyond the single shot, which I think is most likely. Emptying a magazine is another story, and I think more often a malfunctioning gun is at fault. (stuck firing pin due to debris...)

First I ever heard of this, tho I admit I'm hardly the gun guru of the West. As I recall from stripping both my M1A and Garand, it has a means by which the firing pin is cammed back by the rotation of the bolt. If you're getting slam fires, I would suspect broken, stuck, and protruding firing pin, which requires the services of a gunsmith, not an ammo change. IMHO.
