Grizzly bear attacks, injures two Glacier hikers

WEST GLACIER, Mont. (AP) - Two people hiking in Glacier National Park were attacked and injured Saturday when they surprised a grizzly bear along a backcountry trail, park officials said.

The 15-second attack occurred east of Lake McDonald as the hikers were returning from an overnight trip to the Snyder Lake backcountry campground.

Officials said the victims were Andrea Haver, 22, of Davis, Calif., and Theron Jourda, 19, of Portland, both summer employees in West Glacier.

Haver saw the bear about 10 feet away and dropped to a fetal position and later said she felt the bear on her but suffered only scratches on her shoulder, officials said. Jourda ran at the bear and hit it in the side, distracting it, and then dropped into a fetal position. He suffered deep puncture wounds on his shoulder and upper arm, officials said.

Officials said the hikers returned to the campground where two Whitefish men administered first-aid and then the four walked 4 miles back to Lake McDonald Lodge.

Rangers closed the trail as soon as the attack was reported but said no action was planned against the bear "as it appears the bear reacted in a natural defensive way to a surprise encounter with hikers on the trail," officials said.

But our nations parks (I.E. Yellowstone) continue to restrict the carrying of firearms on National parks land.Thank god things did not turn out for the worst here but if there is even a slight risk of bear attack, are the numbers ever in your favor if the attack occurs? Not unless you are carrying the great equalizer of a firearm.

There has been talk here before of young people not having any courage. Id say running up and whacking a maddened Grizzly in the side with your hand qualifies.

Well when playing in known bear country, you play by the rules mother nature created. A firearm would probably have resulted in the needless death of this bear, or a more severe mauling from a wounded bear.

I got it now!! All this time I thought the reason firearms are not permitted in the National Parks was to make it easier for the Robbers and Rapers! Hell NO! It's so the Bears can eat with worries about getting SHOT! Hell of a deal! Boy, was I ever wrong!
