Pistol questions

A buddy of mine is looking into buying his first pistol for self defense and target/sport shooting. I have been trying to give him an unbiased and educated opinion. It's not working, I keep recommending Glock A few questions have come up:1) Can frangible ammo be fired through a Glock 32c? (I know that non-jacketed lead projectiles shouldn't be used)2) What is the quality of IMI guns? I've never owned or shot one, so I have no idea.3) Is the .357Sig cartridge a winner? If not, why?Thanks,G36

Is he going to carry it? IMHO, defense and sport/target shooting are two different animals. My carry is a Commander. Mrs. Mudge carries a Glock 30. They're not really a target/sport shooting guns. They're not designed to be. My target/sport shooting guns are not something I would want to carry. See what I mean?Mudge the opinionated

I dont know about frangible ammo, but if you want to shoot non-jacketed lead projectiles you can buy a new barrel for about 70 or 80 dollars.Dont know anything about IMI execpt they make Uzi'sThe 357Sig is a winner, its basically a reshaped .40, but with a higher FPS and is balistically better.[This message has been edited by Gene B. Thanks fellas. Quick response, I love it (you guys make me look smart!).I know, a personal defense/sport pistol is some kind of anomaly. But, he only has enough $$ for one gun and he wants to use it for both. I am trying to suggest something that is dependable, safe, reasonably easy to care for and something that has readily available ammo.I told him that I liked the Beretta 92FS, the Glock (several models) and the Kimber (several models). He's like 6' 5", so I don't think he'll need a sub-compact pistol to be able to conceal it.Again, thank you..

If he wants a barrel that long he should look into a H&K, or Beretta.[This message has been edited by Gene B. (edited 12-03-2001).]

"Readily available ammo" would seem to rule out the .357 Sig.For the ammo consideration I'd suggest something like 9mm or 45acp.Have you suggested he consider a Glock? (My Glock 26 thinks it's a target pistol with Corbon 115gr +P ammo!)

If he likes the G32c, have him go for it. Ammo is available, if not locally he can get it online in bulk and save a little. The Comp model would serve a target gun if need be, but you're probably talking practice more so than competition, so In that respect it would do fine. For carry it will work as well, what I would recommend is to pick up a non comp barrel to drop in for carry. The IMI's are decent firearms, well built and well balanced. They too would serve either purpose but will be a tad heavier because of the full steel frame. Still an excellent shooting platform. The .357sig is indeed an over hyped round. It's hot, I'll admit that. The necked down .40 case allows the round to pack more punch which is also felt in the form of recoil. You'll never see the difference in speed with the naked eye and I doubt that he'll have a need to penetrate windshields and the like such as those in Law Enforcement so it's really a personal choice there.
