Have recently been eyeballing a real nice .45 for the collection....had almost made the decision to go with a Kimber Super Match ($1927.00) www.kimberamerica.com ....then I handled a Wilson Combat Classic Super Grade....wow!...the workmanship is stunning as it should be for $3495.00. www.wilsoncombat.com Anyone have personal experience with either of these....or other recomendations? I don't want anything less after holding these two...I've been spoiled....

Rembrandt if I had those kind of bucks I'd buy one of each. Then you could send the one you don't like to me. I'll even pay the shipping.
So many guns to buy. So little money.

I don't have those kind of bucks either....I just put a little away every month and try to have patience. May end up selling a shotgun or two. I don't think I've seen slides as tight and overall workmanship as nice as the Wilson unit. It was pretty impressive!

If you want a true custom .45 then get a Kimber Custom and send it to this guy. http://www.burnscustom.com/ Or if you wish work on the gun yourself and get it just the way you want it. Look at www.pistolsmith.com in the home work shop board and get to work.

Just take that same amount of $, and buy about 20 High Point Arms .45s. I think Evil ATF or Supermonkey will back me up on this, as they are about on par with the amazing Ravens and Jennings. Why buy one when you can have 20?

I know it's a departure from the traditional single-stack but, for that price, you can bid on the pair of new Stainless Para-Ordnance P-14 Limited pistols for $1,800. They are excellent guns and you can still get hi-caps for the P-14 fairly easily unlike their other less-popular models.

Check out www.lesbaer.com or www.rockriverarms.com I have a Les Baer Thunder Ranch that is the best 1911 I have ever owned. There have been alot of good things written about Rock River also but I have not shot one yet.Wilson and Kimber both make great guns but my personal choice between the two would be the Wilson. www.1911forum.com also has some good info.

Rembrandt,If it makes any difference, Wilson buys their forgings from Kimber!I'm kind of in the same delima myself right now ... only I dont know wheather to buy an Pre-Ban Steyr AUG or a Post-Ban USR and save about $23-2500 ... but for the $$$ I'm leaning towards the USR ...

Rembrandt, If you want to know where to start, and maybe finish, a superb 1911, in Indiana, with parts at wholesale, and otherworldlike labor at retail, get in touch. Why you? I like the name.I have a pistol similar to a Clark Caspian Damascus slide, sorta like the one the cover of Shooting Times. It would retail at a grand more, but costs $1,800 less to build.Give me a 'Hey Homer' and we'll set up a response day and time. Then erase it, and trade emails.Otherwise, I had a ball building my super gun. It took 1 1/2 years. (I'm slow, broke.) My gunsmith was a big help, so much so, that I'd never want to do it to him again. He spent way too much time educating me. But I'm a weekly customer.... however, I'm willing to hook you guys up as a middleman, and you have research to do first. The research sourse is where you will save big time.

Idsman, Thanks, but I'm looking for a single stack 1911. (P.S. Got your deer gun sighted in yet?)Custom .45's are the high performance street rods of the 1911 handguns. Most get blinded by a price tag, sometimes not aware of the amount of precision hand fitting and machine work required. Many mis-define a custom .45 as the addition of a couple of hundred dollars worth of trick parts. Have known many that started with $800 guns only to add another thousand to get what the production models didn't offer. $2K+ is not unusual for a custom .45. I'm interested in a completed unit by a nationally recognized gunsmith. Resale and investment value will hold if the quality is there to start with. You get what you pay for.....so I'm not interested in production tolerances and average units.

I'm still playing catch up....that kitchen should be worth a few more gun purchases....but let's not upset Mrs Rembrandt with any undue stress.
