Computer ISP Question

Last Saturday, I could not log on to my ISP. I got a message asking for my password. That always means that the account is already open.I called the ISP. Sometimes the equipment fails to disconnect, and shows my account active when it is not. The tech guy said he checked the account and someone was logged on. He could not tell me from what location. At the time, my son was visiting at his mother's house. He usually carries a laptop with him, so I figured it was he that logged on. In just a few minutes, I was able to log on as usual. When he returned to my house, I related the incident to him. Funny thing. He had not taken his laptop, and so was not logged on.Any ideas how that can happen? It takes a user name and password to get online. Could I have been hacked?

I don't think you were hacked. What benefit to using another person's ISP? Not much. I think you probably have what I have
a crummy ISP. I have Prodigy since we moved here a month ago and it is the worst ISP we have ever had. Disconnects all the time, is slow, freezes, etc. I'm getting a new ISP real soon. AT&T World Net is rated by the computer books as the best national ISP.

Oh great!!!! I just migrated to MSN tonight (my ISP was switching). I already don't like the way it 'infects' my system. Well ..... I'll give it a trial run and see what happens. GL

For those of you unhappy w/ an ISP, take a look at outdoors.net $20/mo w/ $1 donated to the organization of your choice (e.g., NRA). They appear to have local POPs across the country, service is good. I've had an acct w/ them for about 6 months w/o problems. I believe they are dial-up service only, no broad-band?

If it's available to you get cable. It costs more, but I got Road Runner a year ago and consider it worth every penny of the $45/month. Everything loads at lightening speed. I can download a 5mb file in one minute. Down time in that year was very low.I wouldn't go back to a snail ISP if they payed me to use it.

I use a regional type ISP, VOLARIS ONLINE, service is great.Been thru all biggies where service sucked big time.I pay $14.95 a month. Use netscape for my browser and mail. I think you have a may have them available in TX.

Last saturday, after allowing my Daughter to call AT&T about why she couldn't get online, I finally dragged myself out of the bed (I have the flue) Seems it was doing the same thing. Furthur investigation determined that the server that authenicates your password had gone on the blink, and was kicking it back, causing my computer to tell me that I had the wrong password. Knew that to be a farce, since it is "saved" and not entered each time I log on. Being sick, not full of patience for them to be giving my Daughter the run around, I even made them give me a credit ($1.37) for the day of "non-service" That ought to teach 'em to mess with my little girl. She had been on restriction and finally got acess to the computer, just to be told it wasn't working. Multiple loggins are allowed (up to 5) without them saying anything, but the cable modem has a logged in serial # that also authenicates upon login. So I can have multiple phone connections, but only one cable connection at a time. Depending on which computer I am sitting at when I decide to login, determines my download speed. This one is slow, only 56k.

When in doubt, change your password.

I had Prodigy & I just bought a new computer with Windows XP. The internet slowed to a crawl.(19.? Kbps) When I called they said they don't support Windows XP yet. At least the new computer came with a year's free MSN. I also had major problemsof all sorts with Prodigy.

Most likely, if they got your password by hacking into your system, they can do it again. Changing it slows them down, oh, maybe 15 seconds. Banking online... not me, but thanks for the offer. Most likely a screw-up with the ISP.
