building a bolt action rifle

I have built a few odds and ends over the years, and am thinking about taking on another project. Bought a set of "Gunmetal Design" blueprints for a bolt action rifle about 10 years ago, and was wondering about the current laws about building one. Does anybody have any info concerning a person building their own firearm. What happens to it when I pass away? Can it ever be sold? Since it is going to be a fifty caliber, does anybody have any "guesses" as to what will happen if they ban them, and maybe turn them into class III? If the ATF makes me register it as a class III, will it then become a regular "papered" firearm? I have heard that there is a limit of one per year. Anybody with any information on this, please let me know. Thanks, Sandman2234 Any links or articles that support your statements would be appreciated. Also posted in Experts, just for the added exposure.

I don't know if I'd say that, but this board is more for the disgruntled Can't help you with the bolt action rifle, other than make sure you know what materials to use. When I was a kid I built a .38 special popgun after seeing Death Wish 2. I fired it in the backyard, scaring the sh*t out of me and almost blowing off my right hand in the process. Not being very wise in metalurgy at the time, I used a COPPER pipe for the chamber. D*mn thing swelled to nearly twice it's original size when it fired, it's shell split to gross proportions.

I appreciate your concern. I have studied alot about metalurgy, having been in a Quality Control Dept. of a steel wire producing company for 15 years. I don't know it all by any means, or even close, but the engineer that drew the plans "over designed" them, and I have all intentions of adding a few more safety features. I am working on adding a addition lug to the bolt to keep it from coming back if pressure exceeds designs. Not as easy as it sounds, because you also have to add the groove for it to ride in, which weakens the receiver. Added metal in the receiver doesn't affect much, because weight isn't a bad thing with this gun. Like I said, still working on that part. Barrel will be a standard .50 aircraft barrel, decided against using a copper pipe. Next year maybe I can get a good barrel, but they aren't cheap. sandman2234
