This looks like a bad place for a stickup 10/24/01By DAWN HOBBS NEWS-PRESS STAFF WRITERThe owner of Dodge City Gun Shop was sitting in his Calle Real store, chatting with a retired Sheriff's deputy Tuesday morning when he heard a commotion coming from Hi-Time Liquors next door."I heard all this yelling through the wall, so I ran over to see what was going on," said Rick Dodge. He stepped inside the store and into the middle of robbery. A gunman, wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, mask and gloves, was 20 feet away and coming around the corner."I asked what was going on and he pointed a gun right at me and told me to hit the ground," he said.Mr. Dodge did as he was ordered. The retired deputy, Bill Gough, ran out the door toward his vehicle to get his gun, Mr. Dodge said."In the meantime, the robber walked up to me and took my wallet. Then he turned around before he left and fired a shot," Mr. Dodge said. No one was struck by the bullet. As he lie on the floor, the gun shop owner didn't have much time to think: "I'm lying on the ground saying 'Oh God, am I going to get out of this? Is this guy going to shoot us both?' And when he fired that round, of course, that scared the hell out of me. And then he just took off running."Mr. Dodge ran out of the liquor store and back to his shop, where he grabbed a loaded gun. Just as he came barreling out of his store, Mr. Gough drove up. He hopped in and the duo scoured the street in search of the getaway vehicle. A witness pointed them in the right direction and the men caught up with a van before it got on the freeway."I wasn't trying to play John Wayne," Mr. Dodge said. "I went after him to see which way he went. I ran to my store to grab a gun, not to shoot him, but in case I got into a problem with him. It was just a reflex."When he spotted the suspected getaway vehicle, he called 9-1-1 from his cell phone and gave police a vehicle description and license number. He followed the van along the southbound lanes of Highway 101 until Santa Barbara police took over. Police put on their flashing lights and sirens, and the van got off the freeway at the Milpas Street offramp, pulling into the Texaco gas station. With guns drawn, officers arrested two men without incident on suspicion of robbery. They are believed to be from Ventura County, but their identities have not been released.Police said they recovered a handgun from the vehicle. An undetermined amount of cash was taken in the robbery. Mr. Dodge's quick response made perfect sense. "This whole shopping center is like a family," he said. "I just saw something going on and decided to do something about it. Of course, my wife's mad at me."He added: "I've had all sorts of thoughts going through my mind this afternoon. One of them is about being in this type of situation unprotected. I've told them if I hear any more noise next door, I'm not coming over unarmed anymore."I just never thought we'd see something like this here -- especially next to a gun store," Mr. Dodge said. "What were those guys thinking?" http://news.newspress.com/topsports/1024stickup.htm

Those robbers are a few cards shy of a full deck.
So many guns to buy. So little money.

Too bad he didn't go to investigate w/ a 12ga - save the state some money and improve the gene pool. Armed robbery in daylight in a mall? A store beside a firearms emporium? Oh, KA . . . must have figured all the honest citizens could buy was *pictures* of guns - provided they promise not to give them to kids to take to school.

Yeah, sometimes thieves don't think. We had a Semi loaded with new GE appliances stolen. The took the truck about 75 miles to a remote spot on a country road. Dispatcher was on the phone with the driver/state police/Qualcom/county sherrif/ as they moved south. Soon as they stopped, the location was pinpointed and we have 2 less criminals on the street.GPS systems are a way of life for trucking companies.
