Did you uninstall McAfee first before installing AVG?

Sounds like a virus to me. You cannot have two different anti-virus programs on your computer at the same time. As was said already, uninstall McAfee BEFORE you install AVG.

Other options, also free, and can be found at download.com:

    1. Advanced WindowsCleaner2 Personal
    2. Wise Disk Cleaner
    3. Wise Registry Cleaner
    4. Revo Uninstaller
    5. CCleaner

When you've got those five programs, along with AVG, you'll almost always have a healthy computer.

Possibly malware, but probably not. More likely an unsuccessful Windows update. In any case I'd guess a corrupted OS.

I've found that one can spend hours attempting to patch and repair or merely do a "Factory Restore" to bring the machine back to the point when you first took it out of the box.

You'll then do the appropriate updates to Windows, remove the anti-virus program packaged with the original software, and install AVG. Make sure that you have a good firewall and appropriate anti-spyware in addition to AVG.

At that point I suspect all will be well.
