I just started taking BOXING lessons, anyone here do this before??
I think this is more cardio than karate so i can learn a lil defense and get a work out. Right now, the trainer has me running which i'm not too wild about but i DO feel good after.i run 20-30 min. so i don't get too tired. Any input???

hey all!

I used to, right there at the Village Tavern. Yep go in to get exercise, (lifting them bottles was hard work) and then try out the new moves you seen on WWF last night. Sure am glad I gave that up, the dang referees had handcuffs and the corners was made out of concrete and steel.

I did a little boxing as a kid, but only in school tournaments. Wasn't all that good. However, I did coach it for several years after I got too old to scrap with the teenagers.

Your trainer sounds like he's trying to get you "in shape" which is step 1 in boxing. You need to be able to run several miles and do 150 sit-ups, among other things. And while doing the sit-ups, someone should be hammering your mid-section with a medicine ball.

There are lots of other things too numerous to go in to here, but I highly recommend you get a good coach...one who knows the sport and will not let you get in the ring too quickly, or in with someone who can discourage or hurt you before you get some skills. You have to get experience but it has to come slowly and in a controlled environment. I don't know how old you are, but some of the 17 year olds you see at the gym have been boxing for 8-9 years. They are ring wise.

And be very concerned with your diet. The objective is to keep your energy at its maximum and the pounds at a minimum. The lighter weight you can fight, the better.

    My humble opinion,

Oh, one other thing. Never, never, never spar or fight without a mouthpiece. I've seen too many chipped and loose teeth that were a result of guys deciding to skip the mouthpiece.

*, you picked up a great cardio sport. I used to run 3 miles a day in under 21 minutes then I would immediately hop in a pool and swim for at least 20 minutes, straight. Swim if you can after running it will be a big plus for your regimine, you will be so darn scrappy in no time.

Punching bag in the garage along with gloves..The ol lady have a bad day at work we spar .She's 5'9" and goes about 140 max...i don't ask lol...My kids love to hit the bag i lower it and let my boy tag away...I did a lot of martial arts growing up overseas still pratice some but really i perfer the boxing because i ran 10 miles a day until the doc. made me start walking (back) so yes it's more cardio..Don't forget your legs tho thats why he has you running..If your legs can be taken away from you your gone...Been boxing all my life i have older brothers and younger sisters never hit my sisters (dad would have beat my butt he's 6'4" goes about 270)but had to defend myself..

Brothers geez someone piss them off it was my fault lol..About when i was 16 i just got tired of it and opened a can of whip butt on one.. the other one got home from work i did the same on him never had anymore problems after that..

While in the Corps I pulled some time in Japan. SSgt I worked with talked me into signing up for the 'smokers' when an aircraft carrier came in. I trained diligently for, maybe 2 weeks, then came the big day. The smokers were 3 two minutes rounds. Longest 6 minutes of my life. (Didn't get knocked out but would prefer not to dicuss it.)

I did some boxing in the Navy back in the 70s, had to quit because my hands were getting messed up bad. The referee kept stepping on them.
