Having spent years collecting firearms, so far record keeping of serial numbers, photos, etc are kept in a small book. I'm not an FFL holder, just curious how others keep track of your guns and accessories? Are there any good computer programs that would do the same thing?

I know I can easily be called a "Luddite", or worse, but, I don't trust, or like, this electronic crap.I had one of the brainboxes dessert me a while back, so, my feelings won't change soon.I got all my stuff, each, on a (fill in your own size preference)...handy card. I'll glue a pic on, if I want.Bob, the neo-modern

I keep a bound book similar to the one a dealer keeps. I also keep record of appraisals in it and it's kept in a small firesafe. I also keep a record of the names of people I've bought from or sold to.WOODS

Yeah, that "bound book", I'll agree is as good as any, I guess, but, I've gotten to where I like way more info down. Wether its for keeping prices straight, remembrence of contacts, or plain nostalgia.Sometimes some weird trades gets done, other times there is a great unusualness that occurs, or you may want to remember a deceased friend and the particulars of the deal, or, a multiple buy, etc...etc.You can put a lot of favorite info on a card as opposed to a lined book.Granted, if you're just pulling them in one door, and pushing them out the back,...this don't mean much, but, a collector will surely feel different.Bob

Thanks, Idsman, glad you like it. (I am assuming it is GunSafe your talking about -- if not, ignore me) ;-)A new version will be coming out later this year, probably arounfd July-August (still free, too) that will add several formatted reports and an optional module for use on a Palm OS PDA. You will be able to export all your info from the existing app and import it into the new version. I'm also working on re-writing the web site so it looks halfway decent and when you click the "help" button in the program it actually takes you to a help file online. Thanks Again,DarkStar11

Now this is what I call a helpful thread. Thanks, folks. I'll go with the free stuff for now. I may keep it all on a disk though, so it's disposable. You never know...We're expected to have pristine records and memories, but every day we see the rich and powerful using their shredders before they even call their lawyers when a storm brews, then the sound bites are always "I don't recall." If they're as smart as THEY think they are, perhaps they know something we don't about this record-keeping business? For the spies, this is purely debate fodder.

Yep, there are two things that I always reccomend for password protection: 1) Encrypt the database using PGP. You can get it free at http://www.pgpi.org/products/pgp/versions/freeware/ 2) If possible, keep it on a Zip disk or some other removable media and keep it with you or in a safe. The new version will include a password scheme, but PGP will still be much stronger -- and keeping the disk and a powerful magnet within reach by will be stronger still! :-)

DarkStar,Interested in an encryption function for your program(I wrote it in VB/VBA)? You can can even vary the encryption rate depending on your preference. Then you won't even need PGP.Munkey
