Did I get ripped or do OK?

I had an HK-91 that I really enjoyed shooting, But here in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia we were asked to register weapons such as these. Being a thoughtfull citizen I declined to do so. However, in one of life's peculiar twists, I became a Federal LEO and now my protest could get me fired should it have been discovered I had this weapon. I traded it to an officer who was transfered out of state. Here's what I got:Ruger Mini 14 with Simmons 3-9 Power Scope.Ruger PC-4 Carbine with Simmons Red Dot Scopeand a Chelsea Navy Clock. Both Rifles are new w/1000 rounds ammo and Kal Legal. Now for your learned opinion. Did I do OK or get Ripped. Thanks.P.S. At this point moving is not an option.

Well, you got a smelly pair of rifles in my opinion, but dollar-wise you did just fine.

I don't mean to be harsh but, if it was a Genuine HK, not a clone, cash value for it in good condition would be minimum $2000, plus value for whatever accessories went with it ... since he was out of state I'm guessing you didn't get a kiss? Maybe I shouldn't say that, I dont know what the clock is worth ...

Saxon,If it wasn't registered why would he have to sell it to a dealer? ... I'd think he'd only have to worry about getting caught with it or selling it ... if it wasn't registered, he wouldn't have to explain where it went because it wasn't registered ... easily could have went out of state and walked it around at a gunshow ... his only legal option would be to surrender it to the "powers that be" and claim ignorance ...just my thoughts ...

Hey, no matter what happened, you still got your job right? Maybe you could have gotten more if you advertised, but if you got caught you'd also have a lot of time looking through the classifieds. It's not so bad.

Are you guys sure it was an original pre-ban? I always assume that people are refering to post ban clones unless I hear otherwise. I'm sure if it was a $2,500 original, the guy would have said so. If that IS the case, then I've got some lovely Jennings I'd like to trade for that old, worn out Colt SAA in the guy's closet. BOHICA!

Saxon,The way I inturpet their "commie" law is that since its not registered he couldn't even sell it to a approperately licenced dealer BECAUSE its not registered, I'm 99% certin that his only "Legal" option would have to surrender it to local or state authorties and hope they don't press charges for possission of an un-registered firearm ... only defence would be to claim ignorance because if he wasn't, he was knowingly breaking the law ... but I could be wrong, thats just how I understand that mess

Thanks for your responses. A little more info on the HK. It was well used and the prior owner had engraved his Social Security Number in a half dozen places on the rifle. The CA Dept of Justice gave me 2 options. Destroy the rifle or give it to the police with no compensation. They don't recognize Federal Officers as as Law Enforcement so I couldn't keep it. I considered selling on Gunbroker, but when I asked the DOJ Officer if I could sell it out of state, His reply was: "Would a pound of cocaine be any more legal in another state?" Gun dealers here won't accept an unregistered "Assault Rifle" So I traded with a friend who moved out of state. I keep the Mini in my trunk, as I work in a rural area and the wife likes the PC-4 for around the house. Now I'm in the market for a Kal Legal M-1A.

You still got screwed. You could have driven across the border to an FFL and shipped it through GB.$1400 MINIMUM.I would have paid that for an HK.cpermd

Saxon,Maybe I'm feeling argumentative today ... so don't take this personally How can you legally take an un-registered assault weapon out of state when it's illegal to even posses an un-registered assault weapon? Again I may be wrong but, it seems that it would also be illegal to transport an un-registered assault weapon (which would be in your possession, therefore illegal) ... I think that the "rule" you're your referring to applies to registered assault weapons since you can't sell them to anyone else in the state.I thought only out of state handguns had to be sold to a dealer ... not applicable to longguns & shotguns????? If I'm wrong again it wont be the first or last time I'm sure

Its all water under the bridge since the deed is already done! Now we'er on the same page, your saying it would be legal: "if he manages to sneak it over the state line" What I'm saying is possessing and transporting it in California is illegal in the state of California weather he got caught or not, therefore its not legal to even take it out of the state! However I agree that once out of CA. the weapon is no longer illegal. Then he could have still walked it around a show, if/when he found a buyer all he would have to do is have a dealer do the transfer, if the out of state rule applies to longguns as well as handguns ... which unless this is something thats been changed in the last 2 years or so, I don't think it does.

Whew! I wasn't going to be able to sleep if I didn't get the answer!I only brought it up 'cause people don't say "Hey! Look at my HK-91 clone!" They say "I sold my HK-91".

borderguy, you got ripped by Kalifornia. The way I see it you have a couple of functional firearms now that won't cost you your JOB or time "in-house". Plus your Bride has taken a shine to one, this is promising for future purchases.... And what is a "Kal Legal M-1A"?

Here's the whole deal. I'm a shooter, not a collector. I really enjoy shooting and the last 2 times I went out I was approached first by a Game Warden and then by a Ranger who recognized the gun for what it was. Both were "Gun Guys" and let me go with no problem. I couldn't be sure that wouldn't happen again. And this was a place 2 hours from where I live. So I decided to sell or trade the rifle.Last March, my son's school got shot-up. I arrived at Santana about 10 minutes later and helped evacuate the kids while SWAT cleared the rooms. 3 of his friends got hit trying to rescue the 4th. My son took cover behind a Coke Machine that took 3 rounds. It may piss some people off, but because of this incident. I decided that I would only sell or trade the rifle to an LEO or someone that I knew personally as trustworthy that lived out of state. I don't want the liability of having sold the rifle to the wrong person. As for the clock I got with the Rugers. I sold it on Ebay and used the money to buy an H&K USP. My agency offered it to officers for $499.00 with night sights, case and 6 Hi-Cap mags. So while I might have lost out money wise. I have peace of mind and three weapons I can take out and shoot anytime I want. In fact... I got a big bag of cans and some oranges and grapefruit off my trees that will soon by sacrificed to make me and my son a better shot.

I'm surprised to hear the Mini-14 is still legal. I lived in L.A. for 20 years (up until 1991) and so I was there for the early part of the "banned list." It kept getting longer and longer. My M1 Carbine was bought there, at B&B Sales (a nice, large gun shop in North Hollywood) but I think by now that would be illegal if I were to go back. I had a couple of nasty letters to the editor published back then on the subject of the ban list. Did my part, in a small way.... to no avail.

"We" as in gun owners subjected to such laws. How do you fight unjust regulations? If you openly defy the law you become a criminal and undermine your position. You can't sway the majority sense Kali seems to be the anti-gunners haven and the residents there are too stupid or brain dead to care. It's a tough situation, give up your rights or become a criminal.
