Whats your favorite "Old warhorse" caliber?

A previous discussion on wildcats got me thinking...how many of us have older, "non flavor of the month" calibers or rifles that we hunt with? Maybe Grandpa's Model 94 in .32 special or an old trapdoor springfield that you pull out once in a blue moon. I'll confess to a model 99 in .300 savage that still puts em down just as easy as the day it rolled off the factory line. My son just loves his SMLE .303 brit with the glow in the dark neon camoflage stock.( only a 13 yr old could love) Non standard yes...fun also. It will never replace my .338-06 but if you are looking for a little more challenge...theres some fun there also. Anyone else out there with a guilty closet???regards swede

When it comes down to the wire I always fall back on my trusty old 1950's era rem 760 gameblaster in 30-06. Gets the job done everytime with no hassle.

I've got a real soft spot for my 1908 Brazillian Mauser in 7x57, its the only one of all my military rifles that I've taken the time to make a custom stock for, so that I can use it for hunting, without altering the original stock or gun, of course. I really like it a lot, Timney trigger that is dangerous, balanced perfectly, by accident, and it shoots so sweet, I love it. I really like my new 1917 Eddystone too, though, so someone please answer my question on the other thread.

My first choice is my Model 70 pre-64 in 30-06. When I hunt a lot of brush covered areas I like to pack my custom siamese mauser chambered in 45-70.

BeeKeep, You tease!!!I have a 1893 Marlin takedown in 32-40, that is my most often played with centerfire rifle. A gift from a late friend and fellow gun crank who rebuilt it from a junker. Most collectors turn their nose up at her but she'll put 5 shots in 2.5" of the bench with iron sights. And because of the restock & reblue I don't worry about hurting it.Also a 98 Krag that my great grandpa bought from the NRA in the 20's and sporterized.45-70 I had a trapdoor I nearly shot to pieces before I traded it for a NEF. I wish I still had the trapdoor but the NEF will outshoot it any day.Theres a few more in the safe but these are the ones I play the most with.WOODS

Every once and a while, I'll pull out my Dad's old Colt "Army Special", load up a few .32-20 rounds, and fire them off.....just let it know it's still loved, and not forgotten.

Ive got an older moded 6 rem. Originally a .270, had to send it in a couple of years ago and get it re-barreled. Now she's a .280 and still does the job!

When the guys with whom I go hunting break out their super-wham-o-dyne magnum hunting rifles with 4-12 power scopes and special $25 a box ammo I just really enjoy unlimbering my 1886 Winchester .40-82. That old 260 grain bullet moving as slow as a freight train is still impressive 110 years later. Beach

1894 Winchester Oct. BBL. 20" rifle in 32 spec. built in 1906 and still does the job.Gave it to my son in Alabama for Christmas.
