Was out calling Coyotes this morning. Was sitting up on a hill above a small herd of cows they were going about their business as usual , when we were leaving one of them started acting all hyper smelling the ground in one spot then bawling , the rest came running over they all went into a hyper state started throwing dirt around like you see bulls do with the front hooves, couple of them started butting heads. Meanwhile this cow was bellering, other cows were sniffing the same spot and Cows from hundreds of yards away came running over to this now group of about twenty cows and getting bigger. hyper, jumping around running around and grouping up.

What the heck were these cows doing?

They could have been smelling a coyote or other predator. I have seen a herd of cows chase a coyote across a field before.

No tellin'. They'll do stuff like that at times. Who knows what they're thinkin'. I sub-soiled (ripped) a field in several places last year to break the crust and hold in water this past spring. When I turned the girls loose in that pasture they all ran over to where I had ripped, started smelling it and going nuts (kicking and jumping around). It was like they were high on catnip or sumthin'. I don't know what the heck they were doin'.

Our cows, bulls especially, will chase a coyote and stomp the stuffing out of it if they get one. Jack did last year. That coyote was as flat as a throw rug when he got done with it.

    That's pretty funny.
Did the brand on the bull read 'ACME' by any chance?[:0][:D]

Saw mine out in a picked field doing that a couple years ago.

Went out to investigate, and found a muskrat they had flattened.

Cows can be pretty goofy and they actually show different personality traits.

I had a baby calf one time that had some kind of snotty looking discharge hanging from his mouth. I put the sneak on him and tackled him right there in the open pasture. He let out a couple of bawls and I was instantly surrounded by 30 mommas. They were close enough to touch. I had raised these cows from babys on the bottle and they were all like pets, but mess with one of their calves and they get a completely different attitude.

As it turned out the calf had just found and was trying to eat a piece of a plastic bag.
The cows let me live that day.

I have seen a herd kick an apparently healthy member away from the herd. Usually the kicked out critter shows up sick in a couple of days. Every cow has their own personality and quirks. Anything different from their everyday life has to be checked out. They're curious as a cat.
