Jeeps for general purpose.

I remember when I bought my first Jeep. In 1974, I bought a 1971 CJ5 jeep with a v6 engine, no A/C, no power steering or brakes,no fancy interior, padded dashes, carpet- just a good dependable hard working vehicle on or off the road. I rolled it over once and thanks to a roll bar, was able to push it back upright and continue along my way.Only damage was a small tear in the soft top and a cracked windshield. I had that Jeep for 9.5 years and traveled from Texas to Colo. twice and spent many a good time in that rig and just couldn't tear it up.It would go thru 3 foot of water and walk over large rocks with a smile. I paid $3,100.00 for it and put over 100,000 miles on it.I needed no lift kits or big tires- IT WAS A JEEP! I looked at the new (Jeeps) wranglers and wasn't impressed. There is little clearence to the ground and with the fancy insides, a/c, power this and that- the price is outrageous. I wish the manufactures would make a good old no nonsense jeep again with a good workhorse suspension, drivetrain and engine without the plush junk and bring the cost down and affordable for us who want one for which it is intended- hunting, fishing, offroading, working, camping ect. I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Believe me though- "I WANT A ROLL BAR!"

I'd rather have that '71 or something similar with a new motor, than a new vehicle.

But I do agree with you. A low-cost, dependable work-horse for us poor guys.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I couldn't even afford to keep a Hummer in tires.

Yeah, and now the dumb bastards have discontinued the non-Grand Cherokee and replaced it with the Liberty; a Suzuki, Honda, Kia, Isuzu, etc. look-alike. The regular Cherokee was the best rig they ever built and I'll bet the most popular. I drive one so I notice others on the road. They're everywhere. Now all that's left of the non-Wrangler Jeeps is the lead-sled Grand Cherokee and the toy Liberty.Whattsa matta wit Daimler-Benz?

This reminds me of the 74 cj5 that I used to own. It came from Camp Picket here in VA. It was plain military olive drab green with the metal hardtop. Like a dummy I sold it and a few years later started hunting again, sure could use it now.

I have had 4 Jeeps - 74, 78, 72, and a 51 Willy's Wagon. You can't beat em with a big stick. I didn't like the 78 as much as the older ones. Now my Wife has a 94 wrangler and she loves it, but it is just a shame that they have turned into the Yuppy go nowhere machines. Yeah she looks cute in it - but it ain't no real Jeep. I give her crap all the time because her's has a winch on it, and I never had one on any of mine.

In my climate I'd need some kind of top on my old Jeep to try to keep warm in the winter, when it would come in handiest. My question is, can you keep warm in a '72 or '74 or whatever and what top is recommended? Also, are they reliable (with decent maintenance) at that age? You've got me seriously thinking about this...

Dad has a 2000 Cherokee with 2 wheel drive, 4cyl. engine, and manual door cranks with NO CD player. Wish more were made like em. I too love a big purring V8, but the 4 gets us everywhere fine, even up mountains in VT. All the bells and whistles just add cost. And now, Jeep only offers the Cherokee with a V6 and all wheel drive, and is thinking of dropping it all together in favor of the more yuppie Liberty.

Still got the CJ5 I bought new in '77. Only about 70,000 miles on it but about half (well, maybe 30%) of that is off-road, to and from hunting camps in places like Dead Horse Canyon or the Road of No Return. Never failed me, never rolled it but I have laid it on its side a time or two.

Damn Hummers. They're only marketing them to rich people with more money than they know what to do with now. They drive it once to the new movie premiere and then let it sit in the garage. But Hummers are hella' tough. Nothing comes close.I once saw a military Humvee with air tight sealing gaskets on the brakes and hood, and an engine intake and exhaust snorkle. The thing could literally ford a river without any problem. Hell, probably a damn ocean.

Hey Jonk: The plain-Jane Cherokee is now out of production. 2000 was the last model year for them. The only three Jeeps made today are the Wrangler, the Grand Cherokee and the new Liberty. The Liberty is the only one available with a V-6. The regular Cherokee hadn't come with a V-6 for many years. The V-6 was replaced with the 4.0 L. in-line six. An exceptional engine. The Wrangler is available today with a four cylinder or the 4.0 six. The Grand Cherokee comes with either the 4.0 in-line six or a V-8.I own a 1997 regular Cherokee 2WD and I love it. I have 65,000 miles on it and havn't spent a dime in repairs. The 4.0 in-line six is one of the best engines I've ever owned. 190 horsepower in stock tune and just about unlimited potential. I've installed a K&N intake on mine (replacing the old restrictive stock air intake box), MSD ignition, Jet Performance module, Helix throttle body spacer and Borla exhaust. I'm probably getting about 225 horsepower from the six and it runs like a scalded-assed ape. And still gets me 18 - 20 mpg in town and nearly 25 on the hiway.

JUNK THE JEEP BUY A LAND CRUISER, CONVERT IT ALL OVER TO GM, AND LEAVE THE JEEPS STUCK IN THE MUD.

simonbs --I'll check around. We do have a lot of Jeeps in this part of the world. Probably could get a deal on one, as there doesn't seem to be a premium on them lately. (Lucky me...)

mtnman, I don't think so. If cruzzers were so great why do you have to convert them...
