How many of you Ladies and Gents own any kind of military iron?

Right now I own a 84 CUCV but in the past I have had other MV's.
M38, 151 I had for a short time. I have to get the wife to post up for me.

I have restored and overhauled a couple of vehicles in my short lifetime. I had thought about restoring/ fixing up an ole humvee or army jeep for S&G's. How much should i expevct to pay for an old jeep or humvee and i would not think that the parts would be all that expensive since they are military vehicles. And would i be able to finda selection ofthese at an army depot or vehicle graveyard area.songdog

I don't think you can get HMMWVs. But a jeep would be a great project. You can get other trucks too. I forgot the website, but I'm sure someone here knows it.

songdog, Hey buddy, thanks for the brass, got it yesterday.I strongly suggest you do not get a HMMWV for restoring. I work on them everyday, getting them inducted to go into the maintenance cycle. The civilian version is nothing like the military's, and the military version is junk. The parts are very expensive, you will not be happy with its comfort, or its dependability. It will go anywhere, but it will break down every where it goes. While the vehicle is great while it is running, consider this, the military has finally seen the light of day, and is now considering replacing many of the Hummers with a military version of a civilian pickup truck, once again. The Hummer has been an expensive mistake. They cost too much for most uses, and are really only at home when in the field, in rugged terrain.

Both jeeps and humvees' are tricky, as a lot of jeeps got cut in two after decommission, especially 'nam era 551s, because they were considered to be unroadworthy by the DOT and could not be used on public streets. Older jeeps are getting hard to find without tons of rust, and of course there aren't a lot of de-commissioned Hummers yet. The ones which ARE available are all grabbed up by greedy brokers and you can bet if it still runs, it's $25,000 minimum. Best to contact the US Govt. surplus material disposal people and try to get one direct first. I'm with ya, though....I really want a 'vee myself...

I don't want a HMMWV or a Jeep (well I do, but its not practical for me). I want a Blazer (I think its M1009 or something like that). Or even a 3/4 Dodge or Chevy Truck (I think the Chevy is M1008).

simonbs- I already have a 3/4 ton chevy. the downfall is that it does not have 4x4. I thought that i might try to overhaul a jeep for farm use and other recreational fun. I think that it may be a wiser decision to look for an old cj7 or something that is closely related. I just do not like driving my good ole truck to the ranch and bashing throught the trees and stuff with it.thanks for the replies.songdog

If you can find an Army 3/4 truck go for it.It was the most useful Army utility vehicle. It could handle rough roads and off road use much better than the M51 Jeep and carry stuff to boot.

Don't blame ya' SDog.Hey, no reason why ya' can't have two 3/4s right? One old OD 4x4 for the farm and the one ya' got now for Smoking Jacket Club meetings, wink, wink.

Jeeps are cool, 'Vees are cooler, but what I really want is a WW2 M-21 "Greyhound" 6 wheeled armored car...now THAT would piss off my neighbors....anyone seen one lately?

i have a 1970 m151a2 military jeep(1/4 ton truck) this one is uncut ( demilled )and never had the r.o.p.s. kit install paid $2500.00 12 years ago, cost about $1500.00 to make just like new, including the deep water fording kit. the best money ever spent and vehicle i ever owned will keep forever and pass on to my kids, my 16 yr old daughter took her driving test in it, they could not believe she could drive stick! get a m151a2 or a1 tons of parts new and take offs, check out military vehicle magazine.com good place to start, ww2 jeeps are just to much $$$$, good luck

About ten years ago, I bought a 2 1/2 ton 6x6. It is a 1956 GMC, with a 302 six cylinder gas engine. It had a relatively easy life at an arsenal with a tool body on it. The mileage was low, about 13,000 miles. It has been a very good old truck. It's only downfall is the transmission, an automatic. Whatever vehicle you decide to buy, check out the magazine called "Military Vehicles". It has all the info and resources you'll ever need, as far as parts and restorations are concerned.

I HAVE A 1951 M38 (JEEP FROM THE KOREAN) ERA. AND LOVE IT. I wouldn't do a hummer, unless you or someone you know is a hummer mech. you can go broke just buying all the special tools needed for them. and they really are impractical for a regular wheeling ride.Rich
