Best Self-Propelled, Mulching Lawnmower?

We've got about 7000 square feet to mow and after 25 years of service, the old Lawnboy is giving up, momma says I need more excersise and the 5 year old riding mower takes up too much room (plus its getting hard to start too) so we'er wanting to get rid of both and buy a good mulching self-propelled unit (at last, an end to bagging!)

As a kid I remember fighting with our Crapsman mower to get it started, but Consumer Reports says its #2, (John Deer is #1 ... but about $900). Our neighbor has a Honda and swears its the best he's ever had. Lawnboy is rated by Consumer Reports somewhere at the bottom.

So you guys in the know, what kind is the best to buy?

I have had a Lowe's branded (made by MTD)self-propelled mulcher for 5 years now with nary a problem. 5.5 Briggs I/C on it. Starts on the first pull if you remember to push the primer bulb a few times. Won't start at all until you remember! Lot's cheaper than Honda or Lawnboy.

Sorry Tailgunner1954 ... been there, done that ... sheep stink! besides we live in town. Can you beleive it, in the city limits, no concealed carry AND no livestock ... heck, this is KANSAS!

I'm not really aginst the $900 for a JD(if it will give me 25 years like the Lawnboy), but I really start questioning their objectivity when they say a Crapsman is #2 and a Lawnboy is at the bottom of the list if ya know what I mean ...

Just bought one of the MTD Lowes specials myself. Brand name : Cub Cadet. Also sold as a Yard Man by other stores. I bought the model with the swivel caster-type wheels in front. The thing turns around on its own length. Handles like a Ferrari. Really great if you have a bunch of trees, bushes and flower beds to mow around. 6.5 HP Briggs & Stratton and 6 speeds forward and canary yellow. The ol' lady can't walk fast enough to get it outta third gear.
It's a cuttin' sumbitch and a mulchin' *. Paid a little over 4 bills for it.

Check out a Toro. I have a self-propelled 21" "Mulcher Deluxe". I've done the Sears thing and others over the years and this is the best I've had. Don't remember what I paid for it, but it ain't cheap. Worth it, however. I bought it for my wife for her birthday one year.

Bought my first Lawn Boy many years ago. Wanted it to quit for the last ten years so I could buy a new one. Damn thing was like the bunny, it just kept going and going. Gave up last year, took it to the shop and gave it to a guy and bought me a new one. About $600.00 Have a 63 Cub Cadet and I have the same problem with it!!

Worlds best self propelled lawnmower is an old mower with a B&G motor that you know how to tune and keep running and a hard working kid to use it.

Had a Crapsman. Was OK on flat lawns. We're in West-by-Zeus Virginia where there ain't hardly any flat. Wouldn't pull the hill in the back yard. Gave it to Salvation Army. Got a Murray at Wally-World. Mulches, pulls the hill, electric start. Let it sit all winter in the basement. Two weeks ago, put in some fresh gas and turned the key. VAROOM. Hadn't been on the charger all winter. I think I paid about $250 for it. So it lasts me 5 years and I throw it away. $50 bucks a year ain't too bad.

    Mudge the lawn boy

I can't come to work today. The voices said, STAY HOME AND CLEAN THE GUNS!

M1A3 Abrams. Run it over your lawn and you won't have to bother with your grass for the rest of the year.

Kimber, Lawboy is owned by Toro now, which I have.(new before winter) it is a 21" recycler(3 in one)rear, side or mulch. It is called the personel pace and has a 6.5hp ohv engine nice and quiet. It controls the speed of the drive by how much pressure you are putting against the bar(up to 4 mph).Home depot carries them and also are at a good Price, mine was a special program they were doing with toro for 299. Heck thats what you pay for a junker,One of the nice things I like is the bag is easy to remove and empty also it is a top drop(for the clippings) . any way good luke with your choice and happy mowing.
