Sorry for those of you who are sick of hearing about it. If this applies to you, please move along with my apologies. For the rest of ya' who don't mind helping a recovering AK adddict (You're next on the rehab list, Monkey. Your case is getting worse every day. From an AK to an AR. Sweet LORD!! Get that man a sedative!), here goes:Why the FAL over the M1A? Why the M1A over the FAL?Also, please tell me which model of both brands is the best and why. I need all the help I can get.
Got President? Evil in 2012!

Evil,I hate to admit it but I don't have an Ak anymore. A couple of guys I know who run the local range offered me 300 each!!! I told them straight up I paid 270 brand new and they were very well used. Said they didn't care, so I sold em. Now every time I look at that 600, I keep imagining I'm seeing 30 pieces of silver![This message has been edited by thesupermonkey (edited 09-26-2001).]

I'm in the same boat, Monkey. I won't sell off any of the AK's until I have my new MBR in my hands, but they're as good as gone as soon as Davidson's comes calling. Be careful posting that you turned a profit. BATF frowns on that kind of thing. Just lookin' out for ya'.

What's the differance between the DS Arms Model STG58A and Model SA58?Apparently the SA58 was voted the best by Soldier of Fortune Mag, but why? Judge Colt:Which model SA58 or STG58A would best suit my purposes. It looks like I'm leaning towards the SA58 due to the good review, but which model SA58 would best suit my needs, in your opinion? Vice Versa for the STG58A models...

I own a few of each. It really all depends on what you want to use it for and how much you want to spend. The m14 is more accurate. the FAL is easier to maintain and adjust. The m14 can come as custom as you want for the proper amount. The FAL has a a slew of after market goodies and variations. Both are extremely reliable. The FAL is more of a battle rifle where the m14 can be tweaked into a fine instrument. I am partial to my m14 but I have 3 FALs and only one m14. The FALS see alot more use. If you want details on any be a little more specific and I'll chuck up my .02Andy

I take it you have abandoned the thought of a pre-ban Steyr FN-FAL. Right? If I understand the DSA line correctly, the SA58 designation applies to FAL-type rifles made by DSA where every part is newly manufactured. The STG58A is an FAL-type rifle built from surplus parts with enough U.S.-made parts to make them legal, which of course includes a new upper receiver. There are many variations of the SA58. Select the one you like best. I have pitched staying as close to the original military configuration as possible because I am not a target shooter. Much of the appeal of these rifles to me is based on their military history, so the models that look most like their military counterparts appeal the most to me. That would mean the long-barreled versions with standard barrel contour. Having said that, now let me contradict myself. If I were buying a DSA today, I would buy one of the all-stainless ones with the long barrel. I love stainless firearms and I have seen an all stainless DSA at their SHOT Show display. Wow! However, if I did not have a beatiful pre-ban Steyr FN-FAL with lots of factory accessories, I suspect I would go with the standard DSA rifle that looks the most like a military-issue FAL. In regard to the durability of the aluminum lower receivers, I do not think there is anything to worry about there. DSA also offers aluminum upper receivers as well to reduce weight. The alloy parts are engineered to be durable so if you want a lighter FAL, do not be afraid of the alloy parts. Of course, the originals were not aluminum....That is about all I can offer. Next.
