A friend of mine has some 50 cal rounds. A sticker on them says spotter/tracer rounds, but the casing is an inch shorter than a standard 50 cal round. Anyone know what these were fired in?

What you have is the .50 caliber spotter-tracer cartridge for the the spotter rifle M8C. The Rifle M8C was used to mark the target before fireing the 75MM and 105MM recoilless rifles. The M8C mounted on the tube and was coaxial with the bore. As I remember, they were semi-automatic and used a five round magazine. The cartridge came in three versions: M48,M48A1 and M48A2. There are slight differences in velocity and type of powders used, but for all practical purposes they are all the same. The bullet should have a yellow tip with a red band behind it. Be careful not to drop the cartridges on their tips or try to pull the bullets with a inertia type bullet puller. "One round to mark the target---fire for effect!" Hope this answers your question.
