"Flash in the pan.""The whole nine yards."There was an episode on "Tales of the Gun" on the History channel some time back that went through a great litany of gun related, commonly used, phrases. Can't remember 'em though. Mudge the senile

mudge- what does "the whole nine yards" relate to? I thought that was in terms that the large parachute took nine yards to make.

Lock, stock, and barrel.Quick on the trigger.Nine yards reportedly has to do with the amount of ammunition a figher plane could carry. 27 feet of linked ammo. When a pilot came home empty, he was said to have given them the whole nine yards.

Well, the whole nine yards also refers to a 9 yard long machine gun belt in fighter aircraft, though the naval reference is probably earlier.
"...hit your enemy in the belly, and kick him when he is down, and boil his prisoners in oil- if you take any- and torture his women and children. Then people will keep clear of you..." -Admiral of the Fleet Lord Fisher, speaking at the Hague Peace Conference in 1899.

The "whole nine yards" that I was referring to was the length of the ammo belt for a WWIIfighter.Never heard the naval reference before. The day's not a complete waste after all!I learned something new. Mudge the educable

Another theory has it that a cement mixer carries 9 yards when fully loaded, thus the whole nine yards. We have discussed this several times, and somewhere once saw the 27 foot linked ammo belt said to be the true origin.Keep your powder dry.Lock and Load. I always liked the line that Estelle Getty the little mother on golden girls had when she was asked if she knew karate. "No, but I've always found a gaping chest wound to be a good deterrent." I think that was before PC TV.

I've also heard it takes nine yards of cloth to make a monk's outfit, so 'the whole nine yards' signified a monk's commitment.I've also heard all the other explanations."He shoots from the hip""A real square shooter"

Lock Stock & Barrel actualy refer to buying a piece of property. You are buying the lock to the place, all of the stock(be it animals or inventory, and (realy old ) even the barrels with the inventory in them( such as pickle barrels, nail barrels, and?)
