Target Rifle (Thoughts...Opinions...etc)

I was thinking of getting a nice long range targeting rifle. If money was no object it would be the PSG-1 all the way, but damn at 15k that is quite the expensive piece of machinery. Then I was looking at the SL8 but I really do not like that thumb hole thing (I refuse to call it a stock and/or handle) and it is in .223. I was thinking something in .308 or 7.62 being that it has a little more bang. Now I really like the way the PSG looks, somewhere between a sport sharpshooting rifle and LE/Military rifle. Now I would be looking for something that I can adjust the balance, stock length and would accept a variety of sights, scopes and other accessories in addition I would also require a cheek rest. With the vast amount of different firearms available I feel as if I am looking for a needle in a haystack. Any opinions and recommendations are most welcomed and appreciated!

The PSG-1 is a nice looking piece, however i'd still go for a Steyr Mannlicher SSG model or a Steyr Pro Hunter Tactical with a heavy barrel - maybe in 308 or 300Win-Mag.
I know they're pricy - but as you said "If money was of no object...!"
H&K Semi-auto's are nice, but the presition lacks the last Oooomph and i don't like the stock either.. =o)
Weapons of a whole other type - would be : (with adjustable cheek-rests)
Try to look up Blaser R93 LRS 2 - Long Range Sporter.
That baby keeps a 28mm (little over 1") groups at 300metres (10 shots)
And is available in 6mm Norma BR - 6mm PPC - 243Win - 6.5*55 - 308 - 300Win-Mag and latest the new potent .338Lapua Mag.
You can get extra barrels for it, mags and such..
Might try to look up Sig Sauer SSG 3000 too - it's in 308Win.
Really nice one (only held it once... never shot it, but it's supposed to be quite accurate)
With the last two mentioned... keep an open mind, they might look silly - but i heard only nice of them =o)

I love my silenced .22 Anshutz rifle =o) And soon to be Steyr Scout with 10-round ext-set. ;o_
It sounds like you are wanting an HK ... have you thought about a SR9T or SR9TC? It has the polyognal barrel like the PSG-1 and can be up fitted with a PSG-1 stock, grip, and trigger group, its also quite accurate. If money is no object, you can buy a HK-91, send it to Urbach Presion Machining, for about $3500 he will re-barrel it, install the barrel trunion extension, weld in the reinforcement rails, forward assist, top rail and Stanag mount for the scope ... and of course re-finish just like factory. He will also supply (and install) the PSG-1 haandguard and is authorised as a Class II manufacturer to re-stamp it as a PSG-1. He has been doing conversions for over 20 years, longer than anyone in the US and is the best ... espically when money is no object
BTW - if you don't like the stock on the SL8, and money is not an object, Special Weapons has a pistol grip stock kit you can buy for around $300, however to do a legal conversion, you need more US made parts ... but thats not a problem because Special Weapons also has a US made magwell conversion that allows the use of AR-15/M16 mags ... also about $300 ... of course it means spending an additional $600 on an $1300 gun that shouldn't be priced over $900 anyway ... IMHO

The only bad thing about choosing a Kimber ...
... there are so darn many models to choose from!

? otherwise, you'll find an excuse.

The PSG1 is extremely accurate, probably one of the most accurate semi-autos in the world. But bolt guns are the king of the hill in the distance category.
A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.
I am not married to HK, so I am open to other makes. I personally would have a price ceiling of about 4000 dollars. Obviously less means more. But I would really like a semi-auto. My friend has a 1942 mauser that has the sniper barrel refit and all matching serial numbers in immaculate condition (drool), so if I need my bolt action fix, I have access to one of the best BA's IMHO. I really just prefer semi-auto and I know it has been an issue of having a reliable accurate semi-auto and that BA has been the choice. Well this is difference, I do not want to compete, this is for personal enjoyment. I would like something that I can reach out and touch something in the 250-750 meter range. With open sights I am dead-on with my AK at around 200m, but after that I am nicht so gut. I know that .308 is a decent round although I have really liked the .300winmag. However I have never heard of .338Lapua Mag. Sounds interesting.
