Got a new gun!

Saved my pennies for quite a long while--not easy to do on a teacher's salary--and finally piled up $700 for a new shootin' arm. Man, was I ever excited to get down to the gun store! I was all set on a 1911 Springfield 9mm with target sights, but a funny thing happened: another fellow changed my mind. You see, my mechanic convinced me that instead of getting a Springfield firearm, I should really get four new Nissan brake calipers. I don't need a new 9mm pistol, he told me; I need new 25 mm brake pads. Oh, and it's not an action job I need; it's a rotors turning job. So, I'd like to tell you all about my new $700 Springfield 9mm with target sights, but instead I'm going to have to tell you about how I spent $700 on a bunch of greasy auto parts. Please excuse me while I go sit in my bedroom and sob like a little girl.

What a waste of money. A good driver doesn't need brakes.

If you had the gun with you and talked to the mechanic nice & sweet, I bet he'd do the brakes for free.

I hate to tell you this, but I replaced the brakes on my 94 Dodge pickup- New calipers and pads, rear cylinders and shoes, turned all drums and rotors ect. and it cost me $278.00 for parts. I supplied 6 hrs labor myself and saved lots of money. I therefore will send you $10.00 if you buy that gun, and don't get new tires instead. Bought new tires for the wife's van on her birthday- she wished I had bought a gun so she could hit me with it! Sometimes I can't do nothing right!

$700 FOR BRAKES! Is it me, or dose that sound outrageous! When was the last time you changed your brake pads? 3 years ago. Did you not hear the brakes squealing? How bad are the rotors? I would like to know how your mechanic sold you on new brake calipers? I had bought a 1989 Ford F250 many years ago for 1,000 only to find that the owner had not changed the brakes in like 2 years. The rotors were all cut up. After finding out the price to reground the rotors, I decide to do some "backyard mechanic" work. I picked up some brake pads form Checker Autoparts that have a life-time warranty on them and put them on the front-end. After about 9 mouths of driving you could definitely see an improvement in the rotors. However, I would not recommend this to everyone. The truck definitely pulled in just about every direction for the first three mouths. But, for a quick fix that cost less then $40 bucks I can't complain. Now, the drum brakes in the rear is a completely different story. If I where you, I would not discuss my finances with my mechanic. It's my experience that few people maintain their cars, except for washing them, checking air pressure, and maybe a little work under the hood. Most mechanics now this and love to run up the bill. I'm sure that if most mechanics new you had $700 to blow they would probably tell you need a complete overhaul on your braking system. One other thing to now about mechanics. "Most" mechanics are really just part replacers! Just my opinion on the whole story.

OK, I started it, I am in for $10 too. We are going to need an address. SXSMAN I have a mechanic I could leave a thousand dollars cash with and it would still be there in 10 years, but they are not all that way. A lot of us have been gouged a little over the years. All the more reason your customers should treasure you.MLincoln, you want to post an address or an e-mail addres so contributors can e-mail for your address?

Maybe it's the meds.Maybe you just caught me at the wrong time.I know there are bad wrenches that take advantage of people.I'm off work for over two months after surgery to repair a severe tear of my rotator cuff.Funny thing,I did it trying to save a customer a little money.I also had a post some ago about finding a 50 dollar bill and returning it to the customer only to be accused of stealing a 20(There are also bad customers)You ELMOS608 PROBABLY did not deserve my lashing out,and hell you might even be right about the A-hole part,I'll leave it at that untill I can argue with a clear head. Thanks for the kind words varmint.Man in white hat- BITE ME!You can all visit Dano at his resort he started WWW.CAMPLACANOOKY.COM hear it's a nice place although I have no reason to visit.

mlincoln,You needed four new calipers?? Did one seize?I can see pads and turning the rotors if the car is a few years old--and $700 sounds pretty steep for that (although I don't know how difficult pulling the rotors are on a Nissan)--but why the calipers?? Did you shop around? Even those of us who know a bit about our cars can "be taken". I had a shop tell me they couldn't turn my rotors (turning them would have put them under dimension); they sold me new ones; I had saved the old rotors--turns out after checking them later, there was plenty of material left; they could have been turned! I had thought I was dealing with a reputable shop--was not the case.Finding honest people in any "technical" profession can be difficult; so many people "over sell" (at best) since they know their customers don't know what they're buying.

The mechanics don't have to cheat you and I suspect most don't. They're more like doctors who always err on the side of caution. Always recommend the most conservative course of treatment. As much to cover their own a***s as to fix the problem.Example: Had a nail in a tire the other day. Took it to a national tire and battery company. "See, if it were a quarter of an inch further away from the sidewall, I could plug it for you but it's too close to take a patch." A quarter of an inch!?!?! BUT - The wife drives this car as does my son occasionaly. Do I take a chance that either of them gets stranded some night? Of course not. So I popped for two new skins (too much wear to put one new and keep one old.). Did I get ripped? No, the techie was just being ultra-conservative. My decision. Could I have taken it somewhere else and had it patched? Sure, but see above.

MLINCOLN-- I made a deal with my wife at the first of the year: Sex once a month or a gun.And she thought that was a great idea. What do you think of that? I wonder myself. But I didn't have any money in October.

SXSMAN, When you get to Florida, let me know and you can shoot mine. We have a few guys that come down to "THE FARM" with different ones, and so the variety is nice. Class III is kind of neat. My favorite is one of the old Thompson's with a hundred round drum on it. Don't have one of them, and apparently it is a favorite of a lot of people, judgeing from the price tag of any of the Thompson's in full auto. I think everybody ought to own at least one machinegun.

Cost me 800 for a brake job on my 89 F250 HD, mostly due to a rear axle seal coming off and slopping the whole rear brakes with grease. Oh, well. It's a Ford, but has, and is, serving me well. I'll send a buck. It's almost Christmas!
