.17 rimfire from Hornady???

Have heard some rumors that Hornady has a .17 rimfire under development. I pulled their # and asked them. Turned out to be true. Sends a 17 gr v-max bullet 2600 fps. Said retail price on the ammo would be around $12/50 rounds. Man also told me that both Ruger and Marlin were chambering bolt actions for it. Ammo and rifles supposed to be in the stores by end of January. Now that would be a real squirrel rifle...take the head right off the neck at 100 yds....very interesting...I might have to have one. Surprising about Ruger though...usually when they bring out something new...its two years before you actually see one. They should be able to chamber their 10-22 mag auto for this also. That would be sweet...anyone have an opinion on this??? regards swede

wyoming did you say a 17grain bullet @ 2600fps? that is amighty small projectile. if you miss the head its not going to make much of a hole even in hollow point. will zip right through. i quit using high speed 22s because of that problem. sound like it would be fun to shoot though and probably not too noisey. le t me know if 17 is just caliber or is the bullet weight also please. i might have to have me one of these. carl

I dont have a link, sorry. I called Hornady direct on their 800# off their website. So far neither the Marlin or Ruger websites have anything about it. I am sure that the PR barrage will commence soon. The hornady guy quoted me a .17 cal 17 gr bullet at 2600 fps. I am kind of leaning toward the Marlin due to cost...however if you can get one in a 10/22 ...well I'll probably have to own one. I'll bet the ammo will cheapen up also...hopefully Federal or CCI will develop a load if the demand is there. I haven't seen the gun rags lately so I will have to pick up a few I guess. regards swede

In .17, this may prove to be moderately popular, but before y'all get too excited, remember the 5mm Rem? Most folks w/ the M571(?) have either converted it, hung it or pay very dearly for the ammo. I had an FFL back when it came out and bought a case of the ammo for about about $2.35/bx. Set it aside for 25 years and enjoyed selling it then *much* more than the buyers liked buying it at market prices. Just something to consider.

Not quite two years ago a friend and I took our Rugers down to Volquartsen's in Carroll, Iowa to have some work done. They had a box of .17 rimfire, what basically looked like a necked down .22 lr that had come from the Aguila ammo maker. If I remember correctly Volquartsen was going to chamber some guns for the round for testing purposes. The thing looked like a miniature .308 shell, with a polymer tip on the bullet. I haven't heard anything more on it, and when I told some friends they looked at me as if I were nuts. Kind of cool that I was one of the first to know if it, in this area anyway.

Haveing been a semi-serious 17cal fan for quite a few years now I honestly think it sounds like a real dud. The things that make 17's interesting don't start happening until you add about another 500-600fps and even better if you can make at least 3500-4000fps. Very interesting things happen when a bullet that fast hits a target. Non- reloadable and your 22cal. cleaning rods won't work. I agree with that posted above, "remember the 5mm. Rem."

I designed a .177 Tungsten core bullet with anecked down cal .25 brass the patent officerefused even to file the stuff and refused any further communications on the grownds ofNATIONAL SECURITY INTERES so i just scraped the proyect all the way ,but anyone there with the guts ?? to do it ??? feel free to say so ? I did some testing in hyper-velocityammunition up to 7,000 MPS (Meters per second)(alcoholized) guncotton and lead azideprimers. It just vaporizes anything on contact ... Railgun like ... quite weird tosee...

You guys have fun, I don't think it will work on elk, deer or even pronghorn, so I probably won't be getting one .

What is the purpose of this round? Am I reading this right a 17gr. buddit??? A puff of wind would blow it way off course. I speck of dust would send it tumbling. What would you possibly shoot with it besides paper?

Tungsten is sold in rod, pellets or powder isdenser than lead and must be diamond grinded to form a core in a coper shrowd ,I dont recomend to do it before consulting the fedson the ARMOR piercing ISSUE...the "Perfect" weight for the .177/25 is 30g in a boat-tail FMJ Tungsten core setup.

Miss. Creant....For "USE" a very lightweight ultrafast .177made from a small blackpowder cap and filledwith magnatec will "vaporice" a 3inch hole ina big soap bar but will be stoped by 3/8 inchof wood 1/8 aluminum plate or lexan (aircraft plastic) if driven by a 1/4 22 blanck load . (crimped type) Perfect DEFENSIVE load to be USED in AIRCRAFT ....Wounds are extremely incapacitating (Shock) in WATER laden objectsas body tissue (Meat) but do minimal dammage to solid objects. (as aircraft panel or window)

Just got an e-mail from the webmaster at Hornady indicating that they will be shipping their .17 cal rimfire ammo to distributors in Mid-January. Contact dealers after that. Rifles would be out when the ammo is..I would expect.
