The Big 50...

It appears as though I'll be able to spend the greater portion of my next check and I was wondering about monster bore rifles. Any of you out there own a big 50? What model? What is the recoil like? What is the effective maximum range? What are the groups like? How expensive is the ammo? Who makes the best semi-auto model? Thanks,(Soon to be) Sniper Monkey...

I agree with Dano, but it should be noted that some folks do seem to derive pleasure in playing with toys like that. I would certainly try to use such a rifle before laying out a bunch of money for one.

Ditto dano. I must need to have my head checked to be agreeing with him again; but what he says bears considerable merit.Simian sniper, there is an excellent article on .50 cal single shots in the December 2001 Guns and Ammo magazine. They test shot 4 different rifles and gave their results. The rifles are priced between about $2000 up to about $3100. That's for a single shot. I think the Barret 95, a five shot bolt action, goes for around $5000. That's without a scope. Now why in the name of the chief simian you'd need a semi auto I don't know. Most people don't have the marksmanship skills necessary for utilizing these rifles at the ranges that separate these rifles from more affordable rifles. Better to spend your money practicing and improving your shooting skills than dumping a pile of money into one of these monsters. When you can actually shoot with a reasonable degree of accuracy at extreme ranges you could then knowingly look at one of these monsters for long range delivery. But that's a lot of practice. A bull barreled Winchester Model 70 in .300Win Mag, 338 Win Mag, or .338 Lapua or any number of other super cartridges would afford you far more more opportunity to improve your extreme long range marksmanship than one of these super guns. Now of course if you have tons and tons money they are really cool looking and you probably would be the only one on your block with one. I think the SERBU BFG-50 is the best of the lot....and with the $1000 you save over the cost of the Barrett you could buy about 300 rounds of ammo!!!!! Beach

sm-i was into the 50 for awhile when it looked like theyd ban it...now, though, when i have a lot of money to waste on stuff(which will never happen), i look forward to the .408 cheytac made by the wind runner guys(edm?)...if you still want the 50, the serbu seems to be a solid choice for a newbie as i remember...

$3.00 a round? I will never own one of those. I cringe when firing my Federal .45 cartridges at ~$0.25 each!

Dude, you could get a KICK * AR for that kind of cash! And still have some left over for a nice scope/bipods/extra uppers/whatever.You'd be the envy of Snipers and Monkeys the world over!

If you're looking for the ultimate in range (which is why I'm assuming you'd want an ultra-bore rifle), take a gander at a Sako bolt-action .338 Lapua.A slight step down from the .50BMG and several thousand dollars cheaper.Yeah, I know it's still expensive. But you wanted range, right?.300 Win. Ultra Mag, 7mm Ultra Mag, and .300 Weatherby Mag all are good ultra-long range rounds that will also destroy any animate creature that you might come across if it ever strikes your fancy.

Monkey,I thought about a 50BMG also ... then some yahoo took his out and put holes through all our 1" steel gongs at 200 & 300 the big 50 has since been banned from our range ... Just when Hess came out with a single shot for $1100 ... not that I'd trust anything Hess built anyway!Back to the point, no where to shoot it, $2-$3 per round ... why bother?concealedG36 ~ You need to reload! My reloads cost me about 6 cents each to make!

Simon,Already got me an Ar, but a 24 inch Match Stainless Free Floating Fluted upper would be nice. I also need to get me some of those lead bricks to weight down the stock. My psychic monkey monitor is telling me a 50 Caliber BFG might not be the wisest investment. Although the sheer fact that Sarah doesn't want me to have one, is almost a enough reason to get it. Thanks for the warning!Ooooo look at the pretty M1a's...

There are some folks that make an upper for your AR-15 lower receiver, in 50, just for single shot, of course, and they run around 750.00. I cant remember who they are, but I saw them on GB no more than 2 months ago, shouldnt be hard to locate who they are, its a lot cheaper, and should be fun, research, research, research.

Monkey, My shooting buddy just got a BAR. This really reaches out and looks cool as heck. Plus you can still get Hi-cap mags for it.

Dude, the BAR was designed to be a machine gun.It cant take linked ammo like every other machine gun (new and old) in the universe. The only mag I've ever seen it with was a 20-rounder. That's pitiful for a machine gun.But maybe you know of some bigger ones.....
