Well, as I've mentioned, I'm going to Front Sight at the end of this month. I've paid for my airfare, rental car and hotel stay. I got a call from Avis today letting me know that since I'm only 24, they cannot rent me a car. I say "Well, I've already paid and you have my credit card number besides. I'm also a married 24 year old with a kid. I'm not going to go out and party in your $8,000 KIA."So, I now have no rental car. With Front Sight being a good hour drive away from my hotel, I'm screwed. I suppose I'll have to try and cancel my flight and make the 24.5 hour drive down to Vegas in the Evil Mobile. Why can't anything ever be easy?

Avis already accepted your reservation of the car? Then you have a contract. If they are going to discriminate against you based upon your age-- tell them you are going to be talking to some civil rights attorneys...

Comp:I hinted at that. They didn't seem to care. They explained that since it was a paperwork error that I got approved in the first place, that the contract wasn't binding. Horse-pucky, but what are ya' gonna do?Yeah, I called all over. It seems to be the industry standard that you have to be 25 years old to rent a car. This is ridiculous. I'm married with a kid and have stellar credit. What do they think I'm gonna do: Drive it off a cliff?

Did you try National? My employer has a contract with them and that's all I use. I know they will rent to individuals between 21 and 25, but I'm not sure if that is just a provision in the contract my employer has with them.

I dont belong to the NRA, as some of you know, but I know one of the benefits is that you are represented with a discount card for one of the big rental car agencies, why dont you exercise a little leverage here with your NRA membership? Its worth a try.

Hey, Evil, don't you have a friend who could reserve the car for you on his card, and you pay him back?

Evil: You didn't misrepresent your age, they offered to rent you a vehicle, you accepted, you paid consideration. End of story. They screwed up the paperwork? Tuffsky shootsky, tovarich. Tell them that a first semester 1L could tuck it to them on that. And that you'll turn it over to the local law school for a fun training exercise if they fail to honor the contract. Remember the case in the seventies when a college student took out a life insurance policy on his gold fish and the insurance company didn't notice that the height and weight were listed in mm & mg? Full value of the policy plus court costs, Mr. Insurance Exec, and don't clutter the court w/ your BS excuses again - you made the contract, now live with it. Same story here, man. These jerks are just trying to intimidate you.The NRA is a possibility. I'd be careful of having someone else get a car in their name - there's an element of misrepresentation there which could be a major problem if you should have an accident or something. If you end up taking the Evil-mobile or any other option that costs you out of pocket, be sure to keep track of every penny. You can't recover for the aggravation (lot of fancy terms for that) in a pure contract case, but consequent monetary damages such as lost time from work because you had to drive yourself, what you lose on the plane ticket, extra hotel expenses, meal expenses, etc. . . man, I'd love to have some arrogant corporate type put himself on a silver platter like these folks are doing.[This message has been edited by Iconoclast (edited 02-01-2002).]

I was just gonna have my folks rent it in their name and I'd "pick it up for them", but they said that only the person who's card is on record can drive away in the car. I'll try the NRA route. If not, I'll ask my attorney. Thanks for the help so far!

Why don't you call Front Sight and see if they'll hook you up with anybody else in your class who'll be driving from McLarren Airport in Las Vegas? Maybe they offer shuttle services?

Alamo has allways been good to me. Are you a member of triple A? They should be able to do something for you.

Not funny at all, Saxon. And (stir, stir) vote should be limited to age 21+ *except* for anyone who's a member of the Armed Services.

You can get a driveers license at 16, handle a gun at 13, with a hunting license, raise a child at almost any age, be required to register for the draft at age 18, perform surgery on a patient with the required degree at any age, fly a plane-no age requirement, run for political office of your choice, except for the Presidency-gotta be 35?, shoot, you can drive an 18 wheeler for most truck companys at 21. I just love the double standard-standard. It gets better too, when you get to be too old, you slowly begin to lose all these rights once again, they start by takeing your drivers license.

Also, you're too young for a job, then, for awhile, you're just right. Then you're too old. Then you die.

Hey Evil, I know it sucks. I was doing a lot of work-related travel when I was 24 and it was always a pain to try to get a rental. In most states, Alamo or Budget would rent to me for an additional charge. Also, larger cities (like Vegas) often have local (non-national) car rental agencies. I just found one that might work for you, though they charge an age surcharge too. http://www.us-rentacar.com/terms.html Also, look through the listings at Superpages.com and other directories. The link above was just the first one I came across. Good luck.

I can feel your pain. I had similiar problems when I was under 25. I was a commercial pilot flying charters across the United States in multi-million dollar aircraft. However I couldn't rent a $5000 car from "rent-a-wreck" because of my age. I'd point to the aircraft and tell them they could keep it as collateral, but would usually get the same blank stare that you're probably getting used to. No way around it that I found, other than have somebody else rent it. Sorry I couldn' be much help, but I know where you're coming from.

When you go to pick up the car, they will ask for ID. Someone else to rent it would do nothing unless they are with you. That stinks! I hope you get something worked out for ya!

Sorry! Been busy busy busy! Thanks a million for all the help and advice thus far.If I fly, I'll be arriving in Vegas the morning of the 21st and leaving the evening of the 25th. I REALLY appreciate the offer SXS, but unless you want to shuttle my butt to and from Front Sight each day, I'll have to drive or figure out a rental solution. I'm going to try National to see if they can lease me a car without breaking my wallet.I'll post again when I hear from them on Monday.
