What is the common consensus on these rifles? How do they stack up vs. the AR's? Reliability, quality control etc.

i have owned/own both types of rifles, sig has excellent quality in its rifles. I sold all my AR rifle and went strictly with Sig and FN piston driven rifles.

Got rid of my AR's for a SIG Classic Swat...don't regret it either.

May I ask what led you to abandon the AR in favor of the SIG?

In doing a search I found alot of negative comments about the 556 from a few years back, but I believe it was fairly new at that point.

The AR rifles i have owned range from Stag,Dpms,Bushmaster, and Rock River the gas impengement system introduces to much fowling into the receiver, bolt, and chamber/bolt locking lugs.
The Sig 556 rifle does not! The AR rifle will fail in sub 0 conditions. I live in northern Minnesota i need a rifle that works. The sig 556 I have had it out and shot it in -40 weather put over 300rds no malfunctions! ar rifle failed after 120rds. the cold locked it up!
Accuracy wise i have found shooting heavier bullents the sig will out shoot ars.But on the other hand the ar rifle will out shoot the sig using lighter grain as in 55fmj and 50grain amax.

I'm old school, I prefer the AR, had both.

But that's just me, usually anything made by SIG is top notch.

My SIG 556 was a good gun, I just prefer the AR better.

I have both AR's and a Sig 556. Like them both, but believe the operating system on the Sig is better.

I've got a few of each and like them both however in my experiance the AR has the edge in accuracy and options such as triggers, barrel twist, sights, grips, and furniture in general but if you want a piston gun, the playing field is level and the SiG has the edge because of cost.

On the SiG I like the option of having a folding stock, nice trigger at no extra charge and nuch less noticable muzzle rise ... and no annoying twang with every round.

On the other hand, the AR is more familure and natural to me ... not to mention I can build one from the ground up re-barrel an upper or whatever is needed.

there is a scene in SALT where the heroine (angelina Jolie) rocks a sig 556 on full Auto...with all the mags linked together and the stock folded up.
    Wish mine would do that....

    Its where she's blasting a hole in the concrete outside of the Presidents underground bunker;

I rembered it the same as you but when I went to look, the scene where the stock was folded was when she was shooting at the safety glass and she only had one mag ... when she mags clipped together she flipped the stock open ...

Waiting on my paperwork from ATF for me to convert mine to a SBR. Have everything I need just can not convert it until the paperwork arrives and I get the required engraving completed. When I do I will post photos....Sig Folding/Collapsible stock on the 556 Classic receiver with a 10" barrel.....Mark

Is there anything remarkable about the 516 that sets it apart from the plethora of other AR's?

I never had an interest in a SBR'd AR until I built my SBR'd SiG

Sig is piston ilo gas impengment, cleaner more reliable.

    Sig quality discussed above.

Its an AR with a Adams piston system ...
... nothing remarkable execpt SiG got into the AR game to improve their bottom line.

thats exactly what I want....I can't even own one with a stamp here in Washington. All you have to do is marry a pistol upper with a rifle lower (or put a stock on a pistol, someone told me they bolt right on) but I don't want it bad enough to risk a felony.
You must be left handed? no, that wouldn't be right, but I swear my stock folds the other way...I better go look, I suddenly lost my mind

You are right, the original and the classic folds the other way.

For years I thought we couldn't have SBR's in Kansas ... our state had prohibited suppressors, full auto and short barreled shotguns since 1986 and I always took that as no class III. It wasn't until a few years ago we won concealed carry back, then full-auto and suppressors back thats I found out we had never lost SBR ... it was just that our local yokel wouldn't sign off. After some reading on the ATF site and talking to other people interested in class III I found how easy it was to do it by "Trust" and get around all that.

I'd been an AR guy for better than 20 years, have several in different configs and calibers but when the SiG-556 came out I bought one of the first ones and fell in love with it ... I could see why the demand for the pre-89 55x's was so high and AR's took the back seat.

Since then I've bought a few more 556's in different configurations ... but never could bring myself to dump the AR's.

Then piston kits started coming out for the AR's ... I picked up on Osprey Defense kit put it on a old pre-ban carbine I hadn't shot in years ... freshened it up with some Mag-Pul furniture and the love started to come back; which is why I'm now waiting on a stamp for an AR lower.

My advise would be to buy them both as they are both great rifles ... be faithful to your wife, but guns don't get jealous [;)]

I saw a Bushnel copy of the trijicon like you have. It was $239...are they any good? I dont really want to pay 1200 for a real one.

No experience with the Bushnell ... but I'd be interested in hearing about them.

The ones I have seen don't have much in common with an ACOG other than the outward appearance. They aren't fiberoptic or tritium powered, they run on a batter,y and the recticles are completely different.

The Busnell Trophy is alot like the Burris Ar332 from what I've seen. I used the AR332 for awhile on one of my ARs and I was impressed with the quality for the price.
