Thanks for the suggestion on The Macallan 12. I picked up a bottle this afternoon.

Having never drank scotch before, my initial attempt involved diluting it with water....didn't enjoy it very much.

Second attempt was a smaller portion, but neat.

Smoothest whiskey (I know, it's "whisky") I've ever had.

Still makes my stomach a bit queesy, but there wasn't any burn on the way down. I think its something I can get used to [:)]

Oh, no. Next you'll be playing backgammon and reading philosophy.[8D]

the macallan is certainly a very good bottle of whisky, but dont let that stop your experimenting. there are six different scotch making regions with innumerable variations among the different brands. dont rest until youve tried them all(but not in one sitting. i hears thats bad for you...)

The one thing I have noticed is that the taste is very complex...I can taste fruit and a hint of vanilla....other things too, but I haven't managed to pick them out yet.

There are 32 primary aromas, but only four primary tastes (via the tongue). Taste is influenced by the sense of smell for more than most people are aware.

ice: I've been told that the shape of the glass can alter the taste of the drink, I assume due to where your nose is positioned.

How much of a difference will it make?

    Welcome to taste heaven.
I could be addicted to scotch.
Try older single malt scotch for an even smoother taste.
Had a couple of fingers of Glenfiddich 18 before dinner.
If you like the Macallan 12 you are gonna love the 18.
You can invest a great amount of time and money collecting them.
It is a lot of fun to have a dram of 2 or 3 flavors to compare.
I get two bottles each year from my brothers. They like me.
If you ever get to NY city try Keen's on 35th street and 6th Avenue.
Over 125 different single malt scotch whiskys. Sigh
    Salute.

Go back to your old thread... I posted some info on "nosing" your Scotch. It is suggested that you keep your own notes about what you discover about your scotch. One distance won't work for different bottles. I tired this out with some 12 yo McCallan tonight. I had to get my sniffer about 3 inches away from my glass to smell anything. Brandy Snifters work best. You can sworl the scotch and release the aromas.

The old thread also contains a guide to Scotch and water....

    Enjoy
