turning up my cummins

Looking to add some mpg and hp to my 2006 5.9 cummins. Already have a new air cleaner and looking at an on board programmer with gauges. I kind of like the edge evolution, but am still looking. Not wanting any huge improvements, just a little more hp's when towing. Any one have opinions?

Yes, I had an '06 5.9..I put a Bully Dog Triple Dog tuner on it. I'd get 23 MPG running 35" tires and with a 280lb front replacement bumper. That was years ago, the technology is even better today for tuners and you can add a pyrometer to pre-turbo exhaust temps. She made really good power too.

Most programmers are illegal to sell now I thought unless used and they have to be VIN unlocked

The '06 was the second to last year of the 5.9 pre- all the emission crap and the Blu tec diesel. His truck doesn't have all the DPF crap that modern diesels have.

Level 3 on a Superchip 500hp/1100ftlbs at the rear wheels,
had a few other goodies on it. Edge makes a 50-60 hp chip
and thats all I would add if towing. Pyro is a good idea.

Wish I still had that truck.
    edit...
Shilo, '07 was the last 5.9 year, mine was.

There are companies out there who will do a total reflash on ECMs thus eliminating all the EPA horsecrap. There is a big one who does diesels like mine, I can have my 2011 CA approved truck turned into a real truck if I want to spend the $$.

Plug in tuners are going up in price and are somewhat hard to get anymore. The EPA cried like a bunch of little girls and got them whacked. Although some of that is thanks to snot nosed kids "rolling coal" with thier baby diesels thinking that smoking out neighborhoods was the cool thing to do.

I've got two programmers for my truck that I bought off of E-bay. They were so cheap that I just bought them both to see which one I like the best. I use the one made by Holley. They do more than just give you more power. I programmed my speedometer for the bigger tires that I put on it. I also programmed the computer to override the speed limiter and rev limiter. I also programmed the transmission for a stiffer shift and I advanced the timing for more power. You can read engine codes with them also.

If you buy a used one you just have to make sure that the previous owner sets his vehicle back to the stock settings or else it won't work on another vehicle. That's what they're referring to when they call one vin-locked. It'll only work with one vehicle Vin number at a time.

I would leave my engines as stock as possible as when they are gone it want be much fun with the new Tier 4 diesel trucks that replace them.

I installed a Flowmaster exhaust. Opened up some hp and improved mpg.

Son used a Diablo in his '06. That thing was beyond stout and put mileage about 28-32. It was scary fast....
