Model 19 vs. model 28

My local gun shop traded for two Smiths yesterday, a 6" model 19 and a 4" model 28 Highway Patrolman. The 19 is clean and feels good in your hands, but everyone tells me the 28 is built on the larger frame and is a stronger gun, especially if you shoot lots of 357 handloads. The 28 is not as nice looking a gun, it does have a very light trigger. They're priced the same, what do you think? Does one really have an advantage over the other? Or is this a win-win situation? Thanks.

Both guns are excellent firearms. The 28 is the superior of the two. It was designed on a heavier frame for the magnum caliber. The 19 is on a lighter frame, and although most all of them function fine, there are cases of the 19 working loose or actually getting slpits from constant shooting of the 357. Like I said, it is not common, BUT it does happen. If they are the same price, the 28 is the better buy.

Course I am a little prejuidced to the 28 as I collect them, carry one daily, and personally have a 19 with a split and loose cylinder from use.

The second admendment GUARANTEES the other nine and the Constitution!

I carried the Model 66 for 15 years. That's the SS version of the 19. I also have several Model 19 Combat Masterpiece. I have run hundreds and hunderds of .357 Mag rounds thru them with no problems. The N frame 28 was carried by the Highway Patrol and they also had no problems with them. the N frame is larger and I always liked the K frame better. But that is just my opnion. I vote for the 19.

Buy both - I would use the 4" 28 for carry and the 6" 19 (with .38sp) for target shooting/plinking.

I think you have confirmed what I knew all along, this is a win-win situation. Unfortunately my finances might not let me buy both right now, but I'm sure I'll buy one. I've played around with lots of revolvers and keep coming back to Smith and Wesson. Thanks guys.

Congrats, have fun! You can use .38sp to cut down on the wear and tear (on you and the gun).
