Resolution To Improve Dove Hunting Passes Through Congress Submitted on: December 18, 2001 A congressional subcommittee has passed a resolution to extend the mourning dove hunting season in an effort to improve hunting opportunities, generate revenue and provide for the conservation and enhancement of mourning dove populations. House Concurrent Resolution 275, introduced by House Resources Chairman James Hansen (R--UT), calls for the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 to be modified to allow dove hunting during the last week of August in specific Northern states. The intention is to make dove hunting more equitable since many of the birds that hatch, fledge and nest in the Northern states migrate south before opening day. In the resolution, the subcommittee stated that extending the hunting season will increase hunting opportunities without harming the dove population; generate additional revenue that can be used for better management and conservation of wildlife through the sale of hunting licenses; and continue to provide for the conservation and enhancement of mourning dove populations. "The subcommittee has reaffirmed what wildlife managers across the country already know-mourning doves are the most widely distributed and harvested game birds in North America, yet hunting the species has had no significant effect on its population," said Rick Story, vice president of the Wildlife Legislative Fund of America. "They also recognize that sportsmen have a strong commitment to the health, conservation and enjoyment of wildlife, as demonstrated by the millions of dollars that they voluntarily pay to partake in hunting activities." The states included in the resolution are: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. http://www.mcrgo.org/news_story.asp?key=702
