1902 - ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO Now that we are in the 21st Century, it might be fun to look back at the beginning of the last century and see what it was like. Read on! The average life expectancy in the United States was 47. Only 14% of the homes in the United States had a bathtub. Only 8% of the homes had a telephone. A three minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars. There were only 8,000 cars in the US and 144 miles of paved roads. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California was only the twenty-first most populous State in the Union. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average wage in the US was twenty-two cents an hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2500 per year, a veterinarian between $1500 and 4000 per year and a mechanical engineer about $5000 per year. More than 95% of all births in the United States took place at home. Ninety percent of all US physicians had no college education. Instead, they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press and by the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee cost fifteen cents a pound. Most women only washed their hair once a month and used borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed a law prohibiting poor people from entering the Country for any reason, either as travelers or immigrants. The five leading causes of death in the US were: 1. Pneumonia and influenza 2. Tuberculosis 3. Diarrhea 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag had 45 stars. Arizona, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Hawaii and Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet. Drive-by-shootings -- in which teenage boys galloped down the street on horses and started randomly shooting at houses, carriages, or anything else that caught their fancy -- were an ongoing problem. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada was thirty. The remote desert community was inhabited by only a handful of ranchers and their families. Plutonium, insulin, and antibiotics hadn't been discovered yet. Scotch tape, crossword puzzles, canned beer and iced tea hadn't been invented. There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day. One in ten US adults couldn't read or write. Only 6% of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were all available over the counter at corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." Coca-Cola contained cocaine instead of caffeine. Punch card data processing had recently been developed, and early predecessors of the modern computer were used for the first time by the government to help compile the census. Eighteen percent of households in the United States had at least one full-time servant or domestic. Can we even imagine what life will be like in 2101?

    THE YEAR 1904
Maybe this will boggle your mind, I know it did mine! The year is 1904 ..
one hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes! Here are some
of the U.S. statistics for 1904:
The average life expectancy in the U.S. was 47 years.
Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
A three-minute call from Denver to New York City cost eleven dollars.
There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles of paved
    roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more heavily
populated than California. With a mere 1.4 million residents, California
was only the 21st most populous state in the Union.
The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower.
The average wage in the U.S. was 22 cents an hour.
The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist
$2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a
mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.
More than 95 percent of all births in the U.S. took place at home.
Ninety percent of all U.S. physicians had no college education. Instead,
they attended medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press
and by the government as "substandard."

The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was 30!!!

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
Two of 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write. Only 6 percent of all
    Americans had graduated high school.

corner drugstores. According to one pharmacist, "Heroin clears the
complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach and bowels,
and is, in fact, a perfect guardian of health." (Shocking!)
Eighteen percent of households in the U.S had at least one full-time
    servant or domestic.
There were only about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S.

    Thomas Jefferson, of Virginia:
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms. . . disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes. . . Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man."

Here's my guess of what life will be like in 2102:The average life expectancy in the United States will be 85, unless you're from Hollywood where you will get special treatment and can expect to live until 105. Only 14% of the homes in the United States will have a non water-saving bathtub. Only 8% of the homes will have an old-fashioned digital telephone. A three minute call from Denver to New York City will cost $0.02. But, to video chat you will need to sign up for 34 years of AOLIBMMS service. There will only be 8,000 cars in the US still burning gasoline. The maximum speed limit in most cities will be 35 mph. Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee will each have more than 40 million residents, while California will become an Independent communist state. With a mere 1.4 million residents, Key West will start to sink into the ocean from all the weight. The tallest structure in the world will be the Microsoft Tower in Redmond, WA. The average wage in the US will be $125 per hour. The average US worker will make between $200,000 and $400,000 per year. A competent accountant will be a computer, a dentist will use only lasers, a veterinarian will not make much as pets will be outlawed because of overpopulation, and a mechanical engineer will earn about $500,000 per year but will be unable to perform arithmatic calculations without computer assistance. More than 95% of all births in the United States will be managed by the Federal Government which will implant the "Universal Identification Tag". Ninety percent of all US physicians will be from India. All U.S. schools will be classified by the government as "substandard." Sugar will be like lard, hardly used anymore in lieu of the calorie-free, taste-free, mass-free, phenylteuritoniks. Eating eggs will be considered "inhumane treatment" of hens. Coffee will be outlawed by the DEA as a Class III narcotic. Most women will not have hair as the ever-growing air-pollution problem will cause it to fall out.Canada will be absorbed into the U.S. after going bankrupt. The five leading causes of death in the US will be: 1. Lung cancer from air pollution2. Murder3. Aspartame-induced brain swelling 4. Heart disease 5. Stroke The American flag will have 65 stars. All the Canadian Provinces, Cuba, Mexico, Central America and Greenland will be admitted into the Union yet. Drive-by-shootings -- in which teenage boys scooted down the street on old-fashioned electric monocycles and started randomly shooting balls of electricity at houses, solar power stations, or anything else that caught their fancy -- will be an ongoing problem. The population of Las Vegas, Nevada will be 75 million. The desert community will be suffering serious water-shortage problems, but desalinazation plants installed in Mexico are expected to provide the daily 7447 trillion gallons of water needed. Insulin and antibiotics are all useless as humans have evolved to become immune to their beneficial properties. Plutonium will be readily available as a home power source.Scotch tape, crossword puzzles, canned beer and iced tea will be in the Smithsonian Institute's history section. The beer will be heavily guarded, as it is now outlawed. There will be 300 new holidays that weren't around when people celebrated Mother's Day or Father's Day. That was when people knew who their mother and father were. One in ten US adults can't read or write Spanishese. Only 6% of all Americans had graduated from a school that employed any Republicans. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine are all illegal, use of any of them is punishable by exile to the moon prison colony. Coca-Cola will be sugar-free, caffiene free, cola-free and come packaged in a non-polluting compound that makes it taste like dirt.70,000GHz data processing will be developed, and early predecessors of the time machine will be used for the first time by the government to help eliminate firearms from the black-market. Eighteen percent of households in the United States will still contain some kind of weapon like a knife. G36
