A Comforting Sound

This evening I have heard four high flying jet aircraft, the first ones since 9/11. What used to be a distraction to the usuall quiet we enjoy here in the hollow is now a welcome sound. I had the thought it was sort of a statement, that we might have staggered, but we did not fall. We are still on our feet and will always be so. I also realised the significance of the date,,,911,,an emergency, perhaps a wake up call for America. Surely now, those misguided people who have been trying to restrict our freedoms will understand how very precious freedom is, and how tenuous our hold on it . For America's sake, let us hope so.

I've got a comforting sound too. I just yesterday bought a rem 11-87, The bolt slamming home on a live round is a very comforting sound. I'll sleep much better.

Same here, only mine's a 1930's vintage A-5 in 16 ga. Note - It depends on which side of the A-5 you're on whether you're comforted or not! The butt end is much better than the business end!

I miss the sonic boom our fighters made quite often many years ago. Scare the hell out of you sometimes but it made you feel safe. Rosie

I watched an AC-130 Gunship fly past the other morning. Anything marked USAF, especially if it's capable of firng that many rounds per minute, is comforting to see.

I was out checking on the cows this evening & watched a B2 come in low. Reminded me of a eagle scooping down on something, beautiful!

I live about 4 miles from toledo express airport which is home to the 180th tactical fighter group. The f-16's are parked outside now along their side of the field. Two 16's are always in the air now patrolling the area.It is a good feeling to hear them fly overhead. Sometimes they sound as tho they are only several hundred feet above the house and boy can they make a chilling racket!
