Anyone like to dove hunt out there? I enjoy it almost as much as deer season, ok not quite but it is in only about a month and deer season is about 4 months away.

sunflower fields are starting to look REAL GOOD here on the eastern shore of MD. last week, I pulled one of the doves out of the freezer and started with the "mark" and "dead Bird" commands while my 3yr old yellow lab female gets into the mode for another season. She starts to shake when she sees the bird come out of the freezer, YA GOTTA lOVE THAT!

I'm gonna go shoot some clay pretty soon to get ready.I'llbe going down on the west end of Galveston Island. If it doesn't rain I'll be shocked.Every year at least one day of the first weekend.

How many doves does it take to make a meal?

If I knew then, what I know now.

I can't wait either. Last year I found a real good spot that nobody is ever at. I hope they come back to that same spot this year. I try to go everyday during the 2-week period. Now you guys got me excited about it even more that I already was, I guess I'll have to go shoot some clay to tie me over.

Now your talking some serious fun..nothing will humble a good shooter quicker than a rocket with wings, that can make a ninety degree u-turn and screw you right into ground quicker quicker'n u can say what was that..whats the average upto now..84 to 12..(thats the shot to bird ratio for those new comers to Dovin game..we can hunt'em clean up into December here in the Hoosier State...But..."Only the Shadow Knows."

The consensus in Iowa is that they are too cute to shoot. Guess I'll have to be swinging over to NE. What does everyone use to shoot doves? I've never shot doves before and all I own is a SXS .410 and a couple of 12 ga pumps.

    I miss this hunting...
Use to be able to go down to the Colorado River, ask permission,
hunt til dawn, but, and the big but is, the farmers, rightfully so, said go to hell. Their fields, farm equipment etc, were shot to s...
Use to enjoy white wings, perhaps gone forever due to a.. h... shooters. Not "hunters". 101

I think the national average for experienced shooters is anywhere from 2-4 to 1 (shots to birds). A general rule for newcomers is that if you can fill up the shotshell box, with the birds you shot, that is a good day.

Pickenup, depending on how they are prepared, 2-3 dove will provide a meal. I usually put them (breasted out) in a croc pot, with some beef bullion and onions. Once they have cooked for 6hrs or so, make a gravy from the broth and put it all over egg noodles.

Some people wrap them in bacon and cook them on the grill with some BBQ sauce or some sauce of their liking.

Ive used a 12/20/28 gauge and find that the most occuring mistake shooters make is over choking. Thinking the target is farther away then it really is..use Improved or Skeet Chokes..light target loads, 7 1/2, 8's or 9's and have a ball. But be sure to take plenty of Shells. But most of all..Be sure of your target and what's beyond..and above all SAFETY FIRST.

1100 SPECIAL FIELD 20 GA IMP CYL OR A 303 BERETTA FIELD WITH IMP CYL TUBE BOTH MAKE GREAT DOVE GUNS. CAN SHOOT BOXES OF SHELLS AND NO TENDER SPOTS. GOOD LUCK AND BE SAFE

I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.

Here in Arkansas the season normaly starts on the first weekend of Sept. I shoot a 12 gauge because the shells are easier to find after opening weekend. Between the clay shoots and hunting I go through about a case a day. A good recipe is marinate them in Italian dressing, wrap them in bacon and throw them on the grill.

I love dove hunting but just wish the limit was 50 instead of 12! It's awful hard to unload and sit and watch all them guys wasting shells after you get the limit and have to quit! I'll be more interested this year because Sarah started going last year and hit a couple. That's all it takes to get a kid interestd! We'll get a good few days of practice before the season because CROW season opens 8/17/02!! They're dummer than dirt those first days and you can call em'in for hours at one set-up. That changes pretty fast though. GHD

We will be going to Yuma again this year. My son is going for the first time and he is excited. We went out last weekend and not one clay hit the ground... guess we are ready. I look forward to dove season every year even though I have not found a good way to cook the little chunks of liver.
