Anybody have any tips, tricks, or other pertinent information?

Or, can you tell me to piss off, so I'll feel better? [:D]

On a serious note, I'm thinking about picking one up...

I have a Colt Woodsman, and today when I was out in the woods I didnt have occasion to shoot it, I only carry it for copperhead elimination. Thing is, when I got back out of the woods I decided I'd go ahead and fire a couple rounds. It decided it didnt want to. The thing would only cock the hammer back occasionally, consistently refused to work correctly. Puzzled me, no big deal. I brought it home, I'd heard something shake inside when I shook it, figured I'd find something obvious. I took it apart, looked at it, didnt see anything wrong. Put it back together, pulled the slide back, gun felt totally different, felt the hammer cock back. Fired it a couple times dry fire, no choice, gun works fine now. No more rattling noise either. I dont have a clue what was wrong with it. Any ideas?

Ya know, when I want to dry-fire my rimfires, I take a spent case and put it in the chamber, with the dent from the first firing oriented so the pin will hit fresh brass. Figure it must be the same as firing a live round, only difference is the absence of priming compound. 'Course you have to turn the case every time you fire...

So far as your mystery rattle, no clue. Sounds like it went away, so I would just keep an ear peeled for any recurrence/further details. The more you can tell the gunsmith, the better an idea they will have where to look, just like your doctor.

I wonder if the hammer strut got out of the main spring socket some way? That would prevent it from firing, and could rattle.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I guess its just one of those things, and maybe it was the hammer strut, who knows? As far as the dry firing goes, dont flog me, I know it was wrong, and will say a prayer of thanks that it didnt do any obvious damage. I should have pulled a bullet out of a round and dumped the powder to use it for a snap cap. I did not have an empty, ever try catching one when it comes out of an auto, or find it in the grass? I know, excuses are like *$$h01es, everyone has one. I'll see how it does tomorrow, gotta go round up some cows in the morning.
