Firing Employees

This past week I was put in the position of being the Acting Executive Director of the company I work for. Had a fellow employee that decided he did not want to follow the directions of his newly hire female Program Director. I gave him the option of following the directions that were given or I would dismiss him effective immediately. He chose to be dismissed, so I did. What would you have done?

I would have to agree, unless the orders given were out of the ordinary or unfair, he chose unwisely to test you.

I can agree with the previous replies. The guy deserved to be fired.

But an option would be: since you are in an "acting" capacity, suspended him (sent home without pay) until the Executive Director returns. And tell the guy that your recommendation to the Executive Director is going to be dismissal. I think the boss would appreciate being in on the ultimate decision concerning this guy...and if the boss is worth his salt, he will accept your recommendation.

I commend you for having the guts to take action. You will be boss some day.

    Thanks for the replies.

The guy was the Acting Program Director while we were doing a search for a new one. Once the new one was hired, he thought that if he did not help her to get into her job, he would be non-expendable.

Rafter-S, when the boss returned on Thursday, he did support my decision 100%.

Submariner, your right, he has never been married and when he rented the house he moved into in Feb. it was the first time he had ever had to live without his momma except for going to college. The guy didn't know the first thing about getting a house set-up as far as how to get the electricity, water and stuff like that put in his name and turned on. Basically lived a very sheltered life.

If you do not stand up for your managers,
they will never stand up for you.

I agree, it sounds like the guy chose his path with his eyes wide open. Cover yourself, though. If you haven't already, document the whole incident with memos from everyone concerned (including yourself) to the Executive Director detailing their part in the drama. That way, when the lawyers show up a year from now, no one will have to rely on memory.

    Reality bites, but it's real.

    WOOF.

Female bosses, didnt know there was a difference, body may me a little different but the title and authority is the same, I actually like working for women, they are usualy a little more open to suggestions.

It's often a good idea to sleep on emotionally charged issues, memos etc. and defer action for a day.
Act in haste and regret at liesure.

For many years I have been in a position that carries the responsibility of both hiring and firing employees. It may sound 'cold hearted', but it's normally harder to hire than fire someone.

When you are letting someone go, you have a definite reason or resons why you are dismissing them. When you are hiring a new employee you never know exactly how that individual will work out until they have been in their position for some amount of time.

I do not envy you, my friend.

I am thankful for three things:

    1. I am not in a position to fire anyone.

    2. If anyone wants to fire me, there are specific laws that must be followed to the letter and an appeal process. I know how it works, having been fired and reinstated. HAHAHAHAHAHA. Personal victory over a VERY arrogant and incompetent former Chief of Police. He got his own butt fired for lying.

    3. If I do get fired at this point in my career, and if it holds up on appeal (not likely) I still get a check EACH AND EVERY MONTH FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!!! Ultimate victory. Kinda gives me a case of the attitude. I told the bosses the other day that I am going to have to start wearing boxers, because one day I might walk into briefing and have something really tick me off, and then leave everything belonging to the city on the table and walk out.

Nunn, just give them your shorts as well, then it'll be a "debriefing".

    Thunderbolt -

Probably why he would be wearing boxers!

(So as not to be "debriefed"!)
