New muzzle loader?

Hey I'm toying with the idea of buying a new muzzle loader to cary during regulare rifle season. Right now I have a CVA firebolt ultra mag in nickle, .50cal.

I noticed that cabelas has a new gun made by TC called the Omega .50

Anyone ever shot one of these?

And are they really dependable like do they have any quirks.

My cva bolt will get bumped up a little and not fire if I'm not carefull. Plus the 209 is still partially exposed on the bolt style.

I don't like the look of the encore style so they are out of the question. But any info on similar type of guns will be appreciated.

Also I'm toying with the Idea of going with the .45 to shoot full size projectiles like the black-belt or power-belts.

280, I have a TC Black Diamond. Picked it up for $250 at Cabela's. Takes the 209 primer as well as caps. Works just swell on pellets and I can hold it to about 1.5" at 100 yr. Works fine with saboted slugs or bullets. Just a possibility for you.

I just bought a Pedersoli rolling block from Cabelas. It takes either caps or 209 primers. I've had a bit of a problem getting the firing pin to hit the primers hard enough. Just took the firing pin out and cleaned everything up good, haven't tried to see if that did it, but I'll let you know later if you're interested.

How about getting a Hawken? T/C makes a great kit, either flint or cap (since you expressed concern about the CVA ignition - I suggest flint). If you want to shoot full size projectiles - go to the .54 Hawken and shoot patched balls (or any number of different maxi-ball/mini ball type projectiles).

I already have 2 custom hawken rifles one full stock in .54 and one a half stock in .50 with a scope to help out my ageing eyes. Also have a nice custom "leeman" style full stock, not a lyman. And last but not least, a CVA Firebolt ultra mag. This is the gun I carried most of last rifle season, but when the weather got really bad I had 1 missfire due to the 209 primer not going off, after inspection I found the bolt was full of water from the trees dripping down while tracking. I also had the gun not fire when the bolt was slightly lifted up, and this has happened several times...the bolt doesn't have a notch to help hold it in position like a modern rifle does. The gun is deadly accurate out to 200yds and I enjoy shooting it, just think something else might be a bit better for my applications in open farm fields.

I was toying whith the Idea of buying a newer design that would stop the possibillity of the bolt not being down...and keep the primer compleatly covered to rule out any other misshaps. Kinda been looking towards the .45 to shoot full size bullets instead of the sabots, I had good luck with them in the .50 but the .50 is a little big to throw a 300gr out to 200yds.

I would consider the encore but I don't like the appearance with the stock. I do like the looks of the bolts, also really like the new winchester in ss but don't know much about them either.

I just recently bought an Omega, $349.00 at the local Scheel's store, but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Looks like a good, solid, super simple design, I guess time will tell.

I think that it is only offerred in .50 cal., though, so if you want to go with the .45, yer out of luck, as far as the Omega goes.

A good source for some help is the "Muzzleloading" forum over at www.huntamerica.com

Lots of helpful, knowledgeable folks there.

Moderator of that forum is Don Wald. He, along with quite a number of others, is really sold on the White brand of muzzleloaders. They are pricier than some others, but apparently worth it. If you've got the coin, you might want to check those out.
