I see them at local gunshows (Wichita, I know your in Lawrence, right?) for $600 to $700, asking price, always thought that was kinda high myself. I saw one sell for $600 about a year ago, in used condition. They reportedly have soft receivers, but those who know say it's not the receivers that's the problem, it's the bolt. The receivers are actually forged (not cast) and potentially the best M14/M1A receiver you can buy. But you would probably need to replace some other parts to really make it safe.

Last weekend at the Wichita gunshow, there was a guy walking around trying to sell one for $700. He had replaced the bolt, barrel, and several other parts with US made parts. It was probaly a pretty good rifle after all that work, but he carried it around for two days with no takers. If I'd had $500 to spare I might have made him an offer. Really, I think I'd have rather bought that one than an all original, mint condition Polytech M14.

I recall seeing them sell at internet auctions for down around $450-$500, as I recall, and those were in decent shape. I think they are asking around $700, or a bit better, on auction listings for new, unfired examples. You might remember they do have a bad reputation for soft receivers. Even if the receiver is okay, the bad reputation will stick with them. That will always be a means by which you can drive the price down, but on the other hand, when you go to sell it, it will work against you. Unless it already had the necessary parts replaced, I'd approach it as a project gun. I think that potentially they are about the best M14/M1A style rifle to build on, provided you don't care about the flash hider and bayonet lug.

To err is human, to moo is bovine.
