Shipping Firearms

I've read the docs but I was hoping someone with some personal experience could comment.
Has anyone shipped a handgun/rifle via ups, what should I expect?
Should I leave the packages open to be inspected?
Will they need to see the copy of the receiving ffl dealer?
Thanks,
Munkey

I have a question about shipping firearms. I, recently, purchased a new firearm that needs to be sent back for servicing (at suggestion of dealer) and am unsure of how to ship it. Is it possible to ship the gun myself or easier to ask a licensed dealer to ship the pistol for me? The pistol in question is a Big Bore Bounty Hunter Single Action Revolver .45 calibur. The gun needs to be shipped to EAA, Corp in Cocoa, FL. Any help anyone could provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you

Kinda depends what and to where and to whom you are shipping them.
Longguns-Rifles/shotguns- may be sent via the US Post Office, you do not need to tell them there is a rifle inside, although you MUST ship it to either a manufacturer or FFL holder. A C&R holder is acceptable as long as the gun is on the C&R list. USPS is the cheapest way out. I've also heard and know of waaaaaaaay to many problems with firearms and UPS.
Pistols- I always ship pistols from an FFL to an FFL, and usually pay $10.00-$15.00 for the service, an additional $15.00-$25.00 for the shipping. I let my FFL worry about the details, I just get a tracking number from him the day after he says he will send it. The FFL sending the gun for you will need a copy of the recieving FFL.
Ammo- may be shipped to anyone, but only by common carriers such as UPS, FED-EX and such. There is a HazMat fee on top of the wieght/size charges. You cannot sent loaded ammo, powder, primers or tracer bullets by way of the USPS. (BTW- It's a really good idea, in some places a requirement, to get an "over 21 and no restrictions" statement from the reciever).

Matt's advice is first rate. Keep in mind that all firearms shipments must be sent "adult signature requiered"...they can't just leave the box on the front porch anymore! Like everything else, the local depot more or less decides what they want to do in the way of questions. They may ask if the firearm is an antique and if not will want to be sure that the party on the other end is licensed. Put a copy of the license inside the box and tell them at the counter that it is in there. The general rule is that if the package is insured for over $1000 they will want to check it to be sure you packed it properly. You might as well just seal the box, they can cut the tape to look at it if they wish and then retape it. Handguns, as I'm sure you are aware, must be shipped next day air. The post office is a cheap alterantive if you can meet all of their regualations. Although it may seem scarey at first, shipping firearms is a regular routine for many of us. You'll soon be an old hand.

mail to the FFL dealer for transfer to the buyer. However unless things have changed in the last month, UPS has no Hazmat fee on ammo.
It goes at the regular ground rate and is rated as ORM-D classification. Needing a ORM-D sticker and a small arms ammunition
sticker near the mailing label. (this is loaded ammo up to .50 cal).

EXCELLENT! Thanks for the that little tidbit!
