Why did they shoot it up?

I have a few acres of land just outside Dallas. I go out there and do a little shooting when they are having competition shoots out at the club. I used a tractor to push up some burms and built four covered shooting benches. I set up 25, 50, 100 and 300 yard targets. I built the covers opened on three sides and roofed them. I put a table under each cover, and set out two 55 gallon trash barrels. I also kept a skeet thrower on the 300 yard range and had it mounted to the edge of the table. I keep it mowed and it makes a nice range.

On several trips, I have noticed that someone has been on the land using the range. The gate is always locked, and there are "No Trespassing" signs on the fence. But, they always cleaned up after themselves, and I really had no complaint. I do wish they had asked for permission, but no real complaints.

Today I went out do test out a new M1 Garand I picked up. The gate was pushed in, and there were tire tracks everywhere. The skeet thrower was removed and missing, and there were bullet holes everywhere. Each table had been shot to heck. The sheds had multiple holes shot through the roofs (each and every one of them), and one of the 4 x 4's that served as a front support had been shot though and the roof partially collapsed. There were beer bottles everywhere, and a pick neck table was missing.

I called the Sheriff, who told me that he would do what he could. He did gather the bottles and took pictures. He thinks he might be able to get some prints off of the glass bottles. He also said he would try to patrol the area a little more and keep and eye out.

Now for my complaint. Who ever has been using the area has done a good job in keeping it clean and picking up their mess. If they come back, they might get arrested, and it may or may not have been them. I'm thinking of just tearing it all down, and carrying a portable canopy when I go. Why would a jerk do something like that?

Build it back, and fix a hidden camera with a motion sensor. Tape the punks and bust them.

Don't let it get you down. There are punks all over the world who do stuff like that. I'd have to average about 5% of the overall population are punks who commit crime.

Rebuild it, don't let them win. I'm not an expert on security, but I'd say try to setup more security. Maybe keep a rabid dog on the property. But a main thing is have it insured. So next time something like this happens, it will be paid for.

I really hate it when punk kids do stuff like that. Some friends of mine and myself spent countless hours and days finding scrap wood, and biulding a paintball field, we had it all nice only to arrive one day to find everything torn down, stuff stolen, ect. It was rather depressing to find some of the stuff show on a local commercial field not a week later when I played there. Everyone know who did it, and though some butts were kicked, nothing ever happened.

If I'm wrong please correct me, I won't be offended.

I would leave it the way it is. I would also post a sign "Trespassers will be shot"

These days, you're lucky not to be sued if dirtbags get hurt while vandalizing your property.

After reading this post twice, I still don't know whether I'm more angered or saddened. I guess it is symptomatic of our 'entitlement' society when things like this happen. I've seen similar s*** happen at other ranges. I do not and cannot understand the mentality behind it. I guess it boils down to the fact there are some real 'holes in every group, even among shooters. Where you don't live on the property, odds are it will happen again if you build it back as it was. Think I'd just leave the berms, mark the distances and bring portable gear. Hope the Sheriff finds the bastids.

Really, really, sorry to see this happen - good luck!!!!!!

I would just like to add something. Where I shoot at, is very nice. They have 9 trap machines, and they are built in a shelter. There are holes all over the top covering, 1-3". There is no way anyone could possibly shoot there by mistake. I think it's a case of "what my gun could do" thing. The shooting range is supervised by attendance. I went shooting there one day. there was a light rain. My friend and myself were the only one's there. No one came out to supervise us. We could have done anything we wanted too, no one would know. If it could happen, it will. Even if these as@hol$s where caught, what would happen to them? Probably nothing, maybe paying for some damage.

    dheffley,
I agree with some of the other posts, if you can afford it, rebuild. When you do rebuild, don't mow it so often and put in some 2x4's with nails through them or some other contraption to puncture some tires and cost them some money if nothing else. Maybe you'll get lucky and they will have to leave the vehicle there until they can get four spare tires out there. Maybe by then you'll have found the vehicle and a plate number. Good luck, and sorry.

I am both saddend(sp) and angered for you.i dont know why anyone would take a great thing and wreck it. i personally would have left a note for you before using it. maybe met a new shooting buddy. but some people only seem out to screw us all. I say repair it. just like the rest said, dont let the punks win. but definately get a cheap hunting type motion sensor with a cheap disposable camera. i'd be happy to help rebuild it, as i live near dallas and am on vacation. BUT NEVER LET THEM WIN

Give your kids roots and wings. and dont forget the guns!!

I agree with the earlier posts. Rebuild it. This time, don't mow as often and hide some 2x4's with nails in them just inside the gates somewhere. When they run over them, they will have to leave the vehicle, since nobody carries four spares. Maybe by then you will have driven up and at least got a plate number or cost them some money. Maybe that will be enough to keep them away next time. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Stupid punks.

    Some people are just spoilers
if they didn't have to build it they don't care about it
mark this one up to jelousy and take precautions for next time
with the missing equipment you can at least get them for theft if found

I'm really sad that kinda crap happened to your place.I'm on a shooting lease out in Seagoville Texas right on the Trinity River.

The co-owners of the land did much the same as you did regarding
    structures,pavillions even Port-a potties.

Yep,you guessed it,some stupid A--HOLES went in there and just shot the stuff all to hell. They even managed to cut down some very old growth trees by just constantly shooting them 'til they fell.

I feel for ya bud.Rebuild it and don't let'em get the best of you!

If you need help running a tractor or backhoe out there sometime,
give me a shout.I could probably lend you a hand.

Thanks for the replies. The Sheriff recovered 4 sets of finger prints. Two were identified. One came back to a Texas CHL holder, the other to a man with a record. He thinks they will have a resolution in about a week.

I think I will look into rebuilding with two steel sheds. I'll make one range to the nort and one range to the south of each shed. That will give me all four ranges only using two sheds. I will build some steel tables set in concrete with 2 x 6 tops. I'll set up a game camera and do a little recording. I may even give someone a free lot to park a trailer on to keep an eye out.

It just makes me so angy that they would tear everything up.

dheffley-Read about Varmint Hunter's experiences under the thread "Game Cameras". He gave me an idea. Put the camera up and bust the punks. Then after that put up a big sign that says, "Warning this property under camera surveillance." First the word will get around. Then any intruder will see the sign. People are scared of cameras.

One group of thugs has destroyed your Range, build it again.Dont let them ruin it for you thats what they want.If any of them have been finger printed the Police should be able to easily obtain prints from the bottles. If they catch the guy who has been useing the range without permission, but keeping it clean, they will charge him with Trespassing, but his finger prints will clear him of the wrong doing. He should ask you before going onto your property.I worked a simuliar case back in the spring.A Boy Scout master donated some of his land to the Scouts. They built some neat little lean toos and had one camper a water slide and a 100yrd shooting range.People took it upon themselves to go there and shoot. The owner who is a real nice guy didnt care but put up some rules, like Please dont leave cigarette Butts laying around and pick up your brass dont spin up the road ETC.One evening Dispatch gave me a call to camp ****.When I arrived I found the scout master a little upset they were broken glass where they shot there Bear bottles and he had picked up maybe ten cigarette Butts.I advised him to lock the gate and put up a sign that would keep people off.Instead he wrote out a new set of rules and added the line dont be the ### Hole to ruin it for everybody. Well it was closed for a while to everyone but the scouts. But now open again to the public. Some people dont know the meaning of respect.

I saw two informal shooting ranges closed up, one on State land and one on private property, because people trashed them. They became garbage dumps for small local contractors. Shooters brought large appliances to blast to jagged pieces. Even signs to please respect the privilege of a free range and clean up after yourself were blasted. There are hooligans among us who are giving us all a black eye and I don't know what the answer is.

Why did they shoot it up-because they are TRASH! They have no consideration for anyones property probably cause their parents where crap-apples don't fall far from the tree. I may be off on this one but it is often more true than not.

It's too bad stuff like this has to happen. We had a couple of gravel pits around here where folks went to shoot and noone ever cared. Then lots of trash began to show up, people were making a mess of things and ruined it for everyone. I don't understand the mind of those who would trash something that another person allowed him to use. All I can say is the people who do such things at shooting ranges should think twice...what if an owner came by and caught them doing it? What if said owner was having a bad day and came out to let off a little steam? What if said owner was a damn good shot and knew the distance to every inch of the range? Someone would be in deep do-do and on the wrong end of a muzzle in the hands of a mad, competent shooter. It's entirely possible the berm would increase in size by a couple of hundred pounds, if you get my drift...

One of the areas I shoot at is State owned land, and like anywhere else the public has access to and is out of view, it gets trashed every six months. Careless shooters use bottles for targets, leave paper targetry, milk jugs, brass, butts-you name it. Occasionally some one dumps a load of household trash, a sofa and a few TV's there. I've even seen the remains of someone's hydroponic dope growing set-up out there.

The REALLY nice part is that the Dept. of Natural Resources sends out a convict crew, either work release or very minimum security inmates, out 2 to 3 times a years to clean, rake and hual off the trash.

DHeffley- Be very careful how you set up any boobytraps, especially in your State! I ain't sayin' I wouldn't, but be very careful. Ask Nunn (or any other TX LEO)about tresspass law there in TX, and see about whether or not you need to post the property or not, and if there are any other options availible.

I kinda like the idea of renting a space to someone to watch over everything- In exchange for a reduced rent you might be able to give a young family a good start, and get the security you need. Just be very careful in your screening process that you do not create another headache by way of a lousy rentor.

    Good Luck!!!!!
