Steve SpurrierSays All SEC Coaches Agree, Players

COLUMBIA, SC (WLTX) - USC head coach Steve Spurrier tells Gamecockcentral.com that he and the other 13 coaches voted unanimously to pay student athletes.

Spurrier said he thinks student athletes should get more than room and board, and has put together a plan to give them atleast $2,000 a year and in some case up to $4,000 a year.

"We're trying to get extra money for living expense, academic expense, game-related expense to our players because of the tremendous amount of money - billions - they're bringing," Spurrier said.

Spurrier first pitched a similar idea last summer, which would give football players $300 a game. About half the coaches in the league were on board.

The NCAA in January delayed implementing a $2,000 expense allowance to students that are on full scholarships.

"We think they need more and deserve more," said Spurrier. "It's as simple as that."

Football coaches voted 14-0 in favor of that, but there is serious doubt whether paying players between $3,500-$4,000 for the entire year would fit into the college model.

Spurrier says the NCAA is thinking about his proposal.

I can see both sides of this coin. The powerhouse conferences can afford this. The smaller schools are screwed if the NCAA tries to implement this across all D-1 schools. Not all programs are money makers and would not have enough to do this athlete wide (Title 9).

Arkansas is one of the few schools that actually operates in the black. I agree many of the schools are making money off the backs/feet/hands of the "student athlete". On the other hand they get everything paid for; room, board, tuition, books, fees. All student athletes can do what every other student does and take out student loans if their family makes too much for them to receive pell grants to cover "other" expenses.

They don't have enough time to work part-time jobs in the arena of football due to the year-round training/playing regimen they have in this day and age.

What is ridiculous is the NCAA ban on the student athlete being able to "sell" anything that is even remotely related to his/her athletic career at the university level. The school can sell a football with the athlete's autograph for whatever it can make. The athlete can not sell his/her autograph or make a single dime off it. The athlete's image is marketable by the university but not by the athlete.

#3 is currently attending the University of Arkansas. I know how much she (we) pay to be there. So I know how much this equates out to for the athlete. The athlete is getting big bucks just not in his/her pocket.

    See, its confusing.

Howsabout the 100K in room, board, classes, books, etc.. that they're getting just to play? Sorry, no sympathy. You CHOSE to play football, you CHOSE to accept the scholarship, you CHOSE not to go out and get loans like everyone else had to, so buck up and deal with it.
