Shotgun Sluggers (Part II)

Well, I have a nother slug-gun question. I have two scenarios and am wondering which one will produce the best results. I have a Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag which has a receiver that is drilled and tapped for scope mounts and a fully rifled slug barrel. Would it be sufficient to mount a scope to the receiver or would it be better to purchase a new barrel that has an integral scope mount? I am assuming that the latter would produce more accurate results because the barrel and the receiver are not one-piece. Anyone's two cents are welcome.

Just my 2 cents, first try with the barrel you have and the scope of your choice,{ I recommend the BSA 1.5 - 4.5 Iluminated Reticle } and if you are not satisfied, fork out the two hundred and fifty bucks for the cantilever barrel and reuse the scope on that. By the way that is the scope I have on my 870 with a cantilever fully rifled hastings barrel.Did you decide on slug type yet?, don't forget to give the Lightfield Hy-Bred a chance, they are Devastating, good luck...

I'd think the difference of reciever mount-vs-barrel mount accuracy would be irrelevant on a pump gun or most semi-autos. You might see a difference on something like a Browning A5 where the barrel moves during each cycle...not sure I've ever seen an A5 with a barrel mount though. Since slugs do not produce MOA accuracy it would be hard to determine where the variance would lie, scope mount or variation in the ammo?

To save money, go with the receiver mounted base. To make it so you can use the gun for shotgunning with the other barrel and not have to worry about resighting the slug barrel each time you want to use a different barrel, use the cantilever type barrel. I too do not see as the accuracy would be noticeably different going either way. Also remember this little tid bit of info. When you take the slug barrel that you have off, for whatever reason, if you have the receiver mounted scope on it, and put it back on, you will not have to worry too much about resighting the barrel, ONLY if you index mark the take down screw on the barrel. If you dont make an index mark, you run the risk of having the barrel's impact shift after each time you reinstall it, with the scope mounted on the receiver. I experimented with this and found the impact would vary if I did not retighten the barrel exactly the same each time. With the cantilever barrel mounted scope, you will not have to worry about this much, unless you really do something different and change the barrel harmonics. I ran into this situation because I like to take the barrel off for cleaning, to aid in reducing muzzle wear and keep the receiver clean from all the debris that tends to be pushed into it when cleaning the barrel while attached. This is just all food for thought for you.

I plan to look for a decent scope at the Des Moines gun show at the end of this month. I'll leave the slug barrel that I have on the gun through deer season and then pull out the smooth bore for the spring turkey that I would like to hunt in May back in NY. It won't bother me to re-zero the scope at the beginning of the next deer season. I almost bought some Lytfields (SP?) but the store I went to only carried the 2 3/4" loads and the box warned against using them in chambers larger than 2 3/4" so I picked up 4 boxes of 3" Brenneke Super Sabots. I was thinking about something like a Simmons Pro-Point. I was poking through a Cabela's catalog and found a 4-reticle red-dot scope but I can't recall the manufacturer. You can adjust between different reticle sizes and then a cross-hair reticle as well. I still haven't made up my mind but the 4-reticle system sounds nice. I could use one reticle size for deer and then another for turkey.

I would use what you have but the cantilever slug barrels are sweet if you sold the fully rifled barrel would bring cost down.Thats what I did with my rem 1100

i have both . they shoot pretty equal . if i remove the barrel on the reciever mounted scope gun ,i make sure it's aligned with a few test shoots before the season . but that is good advice for any gun scoped or iron sighted .it's worth the ammo and time to make sure your on the money when a big one is coming at you .with that in mind i'd use the barrel that you already have . wrench .

I have great luck with different Tasco Pro Points. I currently have three of them...One on a Colt Anaconda, another on a Marlin Camp Nine and a third on a Rem. 870. Bottom line with Dot sights, do not buy a cheap one. They do not hold up well and the dot is usually fuzzy.

Blah, if you will and as it were.

Anyway, my good man, do you recall my Pro-point that I had on my Guidegun? I recently dropped the 45-70 off at Wild West Guns (yes the co-pilot company....they're only a 10 minute drive from where I'm staying....don't be jealous, Blah) for some work, and I think I'll end up going with their scout mounted Leupold and ghost rings. Soooo, as of right now I have no pressing need for it. You want it you got it.

Give me a call, same number, but the ext. is now 204.

That's at least 5 cents worth, I'll kindly take my change sir.
