Stuck in Dumas TX!!!!

The alternator in my 2001 Subaru Outback is shot and no one in the thriving metropolis of Dumas (population 17k) can get one before tomorrow. So the family and I are hanging out in the a local hotel. With any luck we will be on the road by noon tomorrow.

I'd really like to be mad but it really wouldn't change anything.

It is out in the middle of nowhere but I actually liked going through there when I was young. There used to be a truck stop there called the Lyon-Bragg(sp) we stopped at all the time on our way to Colorado. I still get a laugh at that name because of the reputation of Texans (myself included) lieing and bragging so much. But like most Texans it's not lieing or bragging it's the truth.[:0][8D]

Once we are on the road again the next stop will be Weatherford just west of Dallas. My wife's family has their Christmas/Thanksgiving this time every year so that no one has a good excuse not to come. I've debated just setting the Outback on fire...

Dumas, TX must be a geographical oddity. 1 day from anywhere.

Yep, foothills of the San Juans, and a pristine river to boot. Did you cut through Angel Fire to see the VVM?

The VVM is really worth going to if you're ever that way again.

If the family is with you next time go over to Antonito and ride the Narrow Gauge Train, or just drive over Cumbres Pass to Chama. Beautiful scenery.

What? You also went through Clayton, NM and right past the HiHo Cafe. Excellent truck-stop type fare and family friendly. We ALWAYS plan a stop there on the way to Colorado or Northern NM. Actually, Clayton is where we turn to head west to Red River, Taos, et al.

Oh can't forget Clayton! Actually a much nicer town than Dumas. Never stopped at the HiHo. I'll see if I can find it on the way home.

BTW ate dinner tonight at K-Bob here in Dumas. I highly recommend it.

We've eaten at the K-Bob, too, but I couldn't remember the name till I saw it in print in your post. Yep, good food. You can guess that a big part of traveling (for our family) is the cool places to eat. We rarely hit the fast food when traveling preferring rather to enjoy the "local flavor" spots along the way. I used to win my share of money at the little indian casino just south of Cortez!

I allways hated going through there though because of the way the truck scales are there!

First off you have to totally leave the highway, and then to top it off the guys that worked those scales were total jerks!

They never were able to find anything to write me a ticket for, but they sure did try!

My favorite area in Colorado was around Monte Vista. I loaded potatoes there alot and got to spend a bit of time around there. The people were great and the country was real nice. I have looked into buying some land there many times but just never have done it.

    Well
Let's all go, down to Dumas Walker
Let's all go, down to Dumas Walker
We'll get a slaw, burger, fries and a bottle of ski
Bring it on out to my baby and me

Yeah we're headed to the drive-in on a Saturday night
Just me and my baby and a six-pack of Lite
Got a pocketful of money and I'm rarin' to go
Down to Dumas Walker right after the show
They'll be shootin marbles in the back of the store
And laying money down on the floor

Let's all go, down to Dumas Walker
Let's all go, down to Dumas Walker
We'll get a slaw, burger, fries and a bottle of ski
Bring it on out to my baby and me

He takes all his orders down one at a time
    Don't need a pad he's got a photogenic mind
He don't like the young folks hanging around
He's here to let ya know we got a law in this town
You oughta see him reelin' when he walks through the door
The marble king is ready for more

I always wondered where that was, now I know, Kentucky Headhunter country.

Has nothing to do with Dumas TX!

When "Dumas Walker" came out it was a huge hit. So what is this song about?

That song struck such a chord with so many people, even though it was a regional song about a fellow who lived in Moss, Tenn. Dumas owned a "package" store just across the Kentucky/Tennessee line on the Tennessee side. It was called "Dumas Walker's" and he just so happened to be a world class marble champion. It was a place where you could buy beer, snacks, fireworks on the 4th of July, and just a small place where the old timers could hang and visit. It was a part of the Kentucky boys' lives growing up, and we just decided to write a song about it and him as sort of an "ode to Dumas." We added the slaw burgers, fries, and a bottle of ski from a small cafe in Greensburg, Ky, where the guys used to eat at after playing shows in the area. After we added it all up, we came up with "Let's All Go, Down To Dumas Walker's" and the rest is history, as they say.

On old (points and coil ignition)cars, a solar panel will power the ignition to get home, but the modern cars' computers and frippery all use so much power, you would need a big panel to power the car.

I was diving to Red River, New Mexico from Oklahoma and I saw a Jackolope between Dumas and Dalhart. My wife thinks I was hallucinating, but I really saw it, or it could have been the five cups of coffee.

I'm betting on the coffee. Being a biologicist, I can tell you with out any doubt whatever that Jackalopes probably don't exist.
