Sort of goes along with headlights but different all together. After many miles your windshield getsall these little scuffs and scratchs on the surface that kills your vision when the sun hits it just right. Is there any company/people who polish your windshield?? Tom

In most states it's illegal to "polish" windshields because depending on how they do it, it can make them no longer pass DOT standards.

Try RainX. It's like a wax for your windshield and I believe it is legal in all 50 states.

Dheffey, I'm very confused. They will not let you clean a dirty winshied because it might confuse the driver? Surely I didn't read it right? Tom
PS I don't see the difference in cleaning and "polishing". What is the polishing part have to do with it?? Personally, I would think the cleaner, polished windshield ( like from the factory) would be the best. Do they purposely scratch new wineshields to not confuse drivers?? Tom

    Tom,

To polish, you remove the glass around the scratch down to the level of bottom of the scratch in the glass. Because of this "removal" of glass, DOT says it will weaken the windshield. I'm not saying I agree with it, but cleaning only removes debris and no glass. Polishing removes glass and is a no no.

If an auto windshield is badly hazed, it is usually from running the wipers with dirt , wet or dry, on the glass, or sand blasting during a severe wind storm. Because of the blinding refraction that can occur with oncoming headlights or the sunlight from various angles, the windshield should be replaced as soon as possible after discovery of the damage.

Wiping mud and sand away with a rag can also produce this kind of damage.

Dheff & Frog, Ah so!! I was talking about the fine scratch marks made by dirt/wind erosion. I do also use the Rainex and it is super. Don't even need wipers sometimes since the water just flows off. I thought it would be nice to polish the haze off an old windshield to make it real nice and slick again. Tom

When I was in high school and worked at a gas station one of the guys was on the path of becoming a millionaire by selling AMWAY!
He did have a product that was like a rubbing compound for windshields. It worked great! I don't remember the name of it, but I'm sure your local AMWAY future millionaire's will be more than happy to help you. If you have the guts to call!!!

Froggie, where I live in the desert a parked car can get sandblasted many days a year. I am on my third windshield on a 11 year old truk. Ashtray is not even full. Fortunately the windshields only cost a couple of hundred.

I had an auto glass company tell me to buff it out using an old fashioned, i.e. slightly gritty toothpaste and rag.

    I find rainex distracting.
