Hollywood Nepotism

Is it me, or is there a lot more people in showbiz today who happen to be related to other famous performers? The issue isn't that these people aren't talented, it's just that I suspect there are plenty of even more talented people out there who'll never get a chance because their father or mother or uncle do not have the same influence.

No it's not just you. If talent were the only indicator for a job in "the biz," a lot of people's kids out there would not have a job. So in order to insure employment for the next generation, they show 'em the ropes, drop 'em into the right places at the right times, and oftentimes let them wind up making mediocre movies and TV -- to avoid generations of Hollywood kids, shiftless and unemployed by the sides of their parents' in-ground swimming pools.

If this process squeezes out the next Orson Welles or the next George Lucas or the next Francis Ford Coppola (even if they've already got the amateur films to prove their real talent), they couldn't care less. The unpleasant truth is, nobody accuses people like Marlon Brando of lying, with his blunt remarks -- they merely accuse him of being rude, non-PC, or indelicate. There is a reason for that.

A question deserving of an answer.

A filthy little thing called the screen actors guild...

You don't even want to know what you must do to get a "board", then after your performance in front of or on the "board" they vote whether or not to accept you into the union. Only a limited number of "boards" convene each year.

I don't think Hollywood is any more nepotistic than any other business.

Look at racing. Do you think John Andretti, Kyle Petty, or Dale Jr. have any more right to a big corporate "ride" than hundreds of guys who have paid their dues on the Saturday night dirt circuit?

Hollywood is rich in nepotism but it might be for a reason other than you think. Music and movies sell best with name recognition. It has nothing to do with talent or substance but rather marketing a familiar name or face.

Keep in mind I hate Hollywood and most the people in the business :)

The status/pay of a job has a great deal to do with claiming family ties/prejudices in obtaining the job. No one gets upset when the foreman of the garbage collectors gets his nephew a job picking up trash cans all day, or a coal miner puts in a good word for his son to get a job in the mine; But if the job is becoming the US Attorney General, or getting a role in films such as Platoon or Falling Down, or a tryout on a Major League baseball/football/basketball team, then the cry goes out. Not without justification.

That's one of the few things Hollywoodites can give their children. . .name recognition.

And with Hollywood being somewhat like a large fraternity (either you're "in" or you're "out"), just that is quite valuable.

But in the end, the name only gets your foot in the door. You still have to deliver the goods if you want anything other than an exceptionally short career.

Cute! I just did a search to see if anyone posted a pair of poofers. It was poofed. I did a search to see if the one we don't talk about is still being talked about. All relevant threads ahve been locked out. Officer Nunn is serious.

OH yeah, most child actors of someone famous, stink as actors! Baldwin, Paltrow,...
Wait! Jon Voigt's daughter is hot!

Not really, the local school district has plenty of people pissed at it because the custodians are all related to other school employees somehow. People who put in years working to get the job (you start as a sub in any job they offer and work until an opening) are passed by for relatives with months of time served.
